Tom was a kind man who earned a worldwide reputation by sharing an accurate history of golf and golf courses, and he and his meticulous research work are missed. The mark of his impact is shown by the fact that he is still part of conversations on those topics. "If Tom MacWood wrote it, it must be true" is a phrase that I still hear. You are missed, old friend.

My sympathies to Tom's wife and kids. Tom always shared a smile. I admired his ability to not take life nor himself too seriously.

I just learned of Tom's untimely passing. Many years ago I was part of the annual 4th of July golf match with Tom, Kent Burgert, and Larry Beetham. Those were fun times. My condolences to Tom's family and siblings.

Tom brought light into every room he ever entered. His light will continue to shine for me and all of us who knew him, as we remember him well. Our prayers will lift him up.

Tom was such a frequent visitor to our golf library to ferret out facts about golf course architecture, that we thought of him as one of the family team.
His diligent research and precise writing earned him worldwide recognition as a trusted resource on golf course design, designers and its history. We always enjoyed our light and lively conversations with him because of his love of life, golf, and Buckeye sports. He will be missed but never forgotten because he touched so many of us with his enthusiasm and friendly personality. Our deepest sympathies for his family and friends for they have lost a special person in their lives. Sincerely,
Mike Hurdzan and all of his friends at Hurdzan/Fry

Tom was a friend, and a colleague that I had the pleasure of interacting with over the last 8 years, but sadly never met in person, given we were oceans apart. Tom was an amazing golf architecture scholar who willingly shared his information with others, and a wonderful writer. As editor of the annual journal of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects I had the opportunity to ask Tom to write a number of major articles for our magazine "Golf Architecture", and he did himself proud with all of these.
Words cannot describe my sadness over his passing, but this pales against the loss that must be felt by his family and friends. My thoughts are with you.

We, The Dilenschneider Family have always referred to Tom as our adopted 8th son. At first, this title was bestowed due to the across-the-street childhood friend that we found at our daily lunch table or the crazy antics he'd perform with a Dilly Bro. As we all grew older, Tom was, well- just part of the family. He shared in our ups and downs, contributed to deep philosophical Dilly discussions with his quick-witted down to earth humor, and seemed to be just there when you needed him most. My brothers, John, Charlie, and Joe will perhaps miss him most- hanging around a kitchen with a chef's knife, a story about some crazy golf incident with a clever comedic hook, and that wiley smirked grin on his face when he's telling it. We'll miss you Bro...

On behalf of Tom's family, we greatly appreciate all of the condolences. Tom was my uncle and godfather. He was an incredible human being and will be greatly missed. Words cannot explain the loss that will be felt now that he has passed.

Tom was the rare person in our world of golf history who could be called a walking encyclopedia. He seemed to know everything about everything!
He was a great researcher. I think what made him so good was he didn't take conventional wisdom or what "experts" said at face value -- he dug and dug until he got to primary sources. In other words, he thought for himself. He came to his opinions through hard work and because of that they were his, he owned them. And they were meaningful: he stirred the pot more than a few times because not everyone agreed with him all the time, in fact some disagreed, shall we say, strenuously.
That's a contribution in itself: spurring us all to consider or reconsider our own views, getting us to dig up new facts to support or rebut this or that point. If someone disagreed with Tom they knew they'd have to get more facts. You couldn't just "pound the table" as the lawyers say and expect to earn a debating point.
And in that way he directly and *indirectly* increased the wealth of information available to all. It should be noted that while he guarded and defended his opinions, the facts he uncovered to form those opinions he shared graciously.
I consider myself a pretty good researcher but Tom was on another plane altogether. Whenever I got stuck I'd reach out to him. He always came through, even (or especially) on things and people I couldn't believe anyone (else) would know anything about. More than once I thought I'd uncovered something newsworthy, only to discover Tom had found it (and of course shared it) -- usually years before me!
He was a great and prolific contributor and a special member of our community -- I know our loss cannot begin to measure up to yours. Just the same, we will miss him and remember him.
May God bless you and keep you.
