Walter Hack Obituary

HACK Walter George Hack, PhD. Professor Emeritus from The Ohio State University passed away September 17, 2010, from acute leukemia. Born May 29, 1925, in Jefferson, Wisconsin he grew up in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 1943. Received his B.A. degree from North Central College, Naperville, Illinois in 1947. Other degrees include a M.A. Degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois in 1952, M.S. Degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois in 1955 and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1959. His teaching career included teacher / coach Alexis High School, Alexis, Illinois Principal, Wagner Elementary School, Glen Ellen, Illinois, School Superintendent at Hillside School District #93, Hillside, Illinois. He taught post graduate Educational Administration - Policy and Leadership and doctoral advisor at The Ohio State University until 1991. He authored many articles for professional journals and his work included co-authoring five textbooks in School Finance and Administration. He belonged to many professional organizations and served on their boards. Including the Flesher Fellowship -The Sweet Sixteen. He was the Flesher Professor Emeritus of Educational Administration from 1985 to 1991, American Education Finance Association, Association for School Business Officials, National Conference of Professors of Educational Administration and Phi Delta Kappa. He was a member of First Community Church, served as a Deacon and on various committees. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of 60 years, daughters Susan (Donald) Krug, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Diane Hack Davis, of Dublin, Ohio; grandchildren, Ted and Mark Krug, of Cincinnati, and Amanda Hack (Josh) Michie, of Anchorage, Alaska; sister, Ferne (Merlin) Hoeft, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; and nieces and nephew, Meryl Lee (Stewart) Nelson, Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Marjean Hoeft, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Michael (Patricia) Hoeft, of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He is also survived by many friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents Rev. George and Melvina Hack, and sisters Ruth Hack, Pearl Scherman, and brother Orville Hack. Calling hours SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Tuesday September 21, 2010, from 5-8 p.m. Private Interment at Union Cemetery. To the Hack Family:
Dr. Hack was the Chair of my Doctoral Committee. It is because of his concern which he used to prompt me that I was awrded my doctorate in 1991. I thank him and will always remember him. My blessings to his family.

My deepest sympathies to the Hack family. Dr. Hack was my graduate school advisor at The Ohio State University. Dr. Hack will be remembered for his knowledge in educational administration and for the great effect that he had on so many of our lives.
