Walter Francis Mason

MASON Walter Francis Mason, age 92, of Nashville, died December 25, 2010. He is preceded in death by a daughter Dorothy Sova, mother of Matthew, Josie and Haley Sova. He is survived by his wife, Carol Barnet Mason; and his children, Daniel (Mami) Mason of Lexington, KY, Margaret (Rodger Webb) Mason of Detroit, MI., Ann (John Carnes) Mason, and Mary (Charlie) Weaver of Columbus, OH., Katharin (William) Mason-Wolf of Toledo, OH, Kevin Ryan of Nashville; fourteen grandchildren; five nieces and nephews of New York and California and their children. Mr. Mason was born in Brooklyn, NY, one of six children to Margaret McGlinchey Mason and Edward Mason on September 17, 1918. Entered the National Guard of New York as a teenager and was later inducted into the US Army at Ft. Ethan Allen in Burlington, VT. He entered Officer's Candidate School at Ft. Still, OK, but had to leave because of a health issue. After leaving Military Service, he attended and graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in electrical engineering and later obtained his Master of Science degree from Kansas State College were he was a teacher. He went on to work as a systems engineer for North American Aviation (later known as Rockwell) at Port Columbus, OH. Subsequently he was a program Manager for Hughes Aircraft in Fullerton, CA. and traveled to Pakistan, Australia and Thailand in Ground Systems Control. In his home in Columbus he enjoyed his swimming pool and stood out as an avid checker and chess player. He was also an actor involved in radio drama with a group in Lexington, Kentucky. He once acted in a movie starring Robert Urich. After his retirement he resided at friendship Village until moving to Florida and then to Nashville. Funeral Mass was conducted Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 11 a.m. from Assumption Catholic Church, 1227 North 7th Ave, Nashville; TN. Celebrant was Father Clare Hendricks.
