William L. "Woody" Mellon Jr.

Mellon Lt. Col. William L. "Woody" Mellon Jr., USAF Ret., 78, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2014, at OSU Ross Heart Hospital surrounded by his family. Woody was born December 17, 1935 in New Kensington, PA to the late William L. Mellon and Susie (Green) Mellon Wenzel. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sally (Chaney) Mellon; his daughters, Sherri (David) Jordan of California, Susan Conkle, Sandra (Stephen) Brownfield; grandchildren, Danielle and Holly Jordan, Ashley and Krista Conkle, Austen and Chase Brownfield; great-granddaughter, Olivia Jordan. Woody spent his early years in Springdale, PA and graduated from Arnold HS in 1953. He held degrees in Business and Computer Science. He traveled the world during his 27 year career in the United States Air Force. Woody served in the Strategic Air Command as a navigator on KC-97's and KC-135 jet-powered Stratotankers. In 1973, Woody became advisor to the Ohio Air National Guard, where he remained until retiring in 1981. After retiring, he worked as a Systems Analyst for Franklin County and Huntington Bank. Woody enjoyed bowling, dancing, reading, and spending winters in Florida with his wife. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. A memorial gathering will be held on FRIDAY, August 8, 2014, from 5-7 p.m., with Military Honors starting a 7 p.m., at the PFEIFER FUNERAL HOME, Reynoldsburg. Inurnment will be held in the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in New Kensington, PA at a later date. Donations may be made in Woody's memory to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org).
