Beulah Hawthorne Obituary

Beulah Katherine Rogers Hawthorne, 93, died on Monday, April 24, 2017, at Dogwood Assisted Living. She was born on February 9, 1924, to Lee Rogers, Sr. and Beulah Pickens Rogers in New Albany, Mississippi. She was a life-long resident of New Albany, residing on Central Avenue almost her entire life. She graduated cum laude from Mississippi State College for Women. Beulah worked thirty years for The United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service retiring in 1979. She married Thomas Cleveland Hawthorne in 1947. In 1953, they were blessed with the arrival of their two children, Preston Age 7 and Patricia age 5. Beulah was a devoted wife and mother. She cherished her family and friends; they were a major part of her life. It was said about her "If you were Beulah's friend you were her friend for life."

Another major part of her life was the First United Methodist Church in New Albany. She was a devout Methodist who dearly loved her church and a faithful member of the United Methodist Women and the Marjorie Houston Sunday School Class. For many years, she volunteered at the Good Samaritan Program; she and Thomas delivered meals for the meals on wheels' program, a labor of love which she continued after his death.

Beulah was very civic minded and proud of her hometown. For many years, she was an active member of the New Century Club and the Junta Club. She regularly attended almost all of the community sponsored hometown events. In later years, she faithfully attended the library's Luncheon with Books and the museum's Museum Moments programs. She also loved to travel with her friends and had wonderful memories of trips both at home and abroad.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, her parents and four siblings: Mildred Frazier (Cecil), Mary Corinne Ridolphi (Fred, Sr.), Lee Rogers, Jr. (Mary Ann), and Ruby Anne McAdams (Herman); one brother-in-law Everett Hawthorne (Opal); one niece, Beth Hawthorne and one nephew Fred Hawthorne (Nancy). She is survived by her daughter Patricia Wilson (Vance); nieces Corinne Ridolphi Nienhuis (Art), Ann Calvin Rogers-Witte (Frank), Mallory McAdams Howell (Kenneth), Sylvia Hawthorne Ferguson (Bob), Nancy Hawthorne King (Bobby): nephews Fred Ridolphi Jr. (Margaret), Val McAdams (Lexa), David McAdams (Jan), Lee McAdams (Patsy) and many great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday April, 27, 2017 from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in the Sanctuary. A Celebration of life will be held following the visitation at the church.

Memorials may be made to The First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 156, New Albany, MS 38652 or to the donor's preferred charitable organization.
