Karl Crossen Obituary

Dr. Karl J. Crossen, 67, of Tupelo, Mississippi, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023. Born October 24, 1955, in Royal Oak, Michigan, he was the son of the late Charles Lee Crossen and Evelyn Pieper Crossen.

He graduated from Grissom High School in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1973. After high school he attended Auburn University for a year, then transferred to The University of Alabama, Huntsville (UAH). At the end of his junior year at UAH, he transferred to the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama where he graduated from Medical School. He did his Internship, Residency, and Fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon completing his Fellowship, he joined Montgomery Cardiovascular Associates in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1998, he moved to Tupelo Mississippi to establish a Cardiac Electrophysiology Program with Cardiology Associates. In 2016, he continued his career in electrophysiology at North Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) until his death.

Karl Crossen, a brilliant physician, and master woodworker has left us with heavy hearts. He was not only an exceptional professional but also a dedicated family man, beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather. His family and friends held a special place in his heart, and he cherished their time together, especially during their "Oh Hell" card nights.

His passion for books, music, and movies was unmatched. Karl's vast knowledge and appreciation for these art forms were a constant source of inspiration and joy for him. He had a knack for thinking outside of the box, consistently surprising those around him with his innovative ideas and solutions. As a natural teacher, he shared his wisdom and knowledge generously, leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to learn from him.

Karl Crossen was a visionary physician who played a pivotal role in establishing the electrophysiology program at NMMC in 1998. Recognizing the need for specialized cardiac care in the region, he relocated to Tupelo to initiate the program. His expertise and dedication to the field of electrophysiology were instrumental in transforming the hospital's cardiac care capabilities. Under his leadership, the program flourished, providing cutting-edge treatments and interventions for patients with cardiac rhythm disorders. Karl's colleagues and patients held him in high regard, not only for his exceptional medical skills but also for his kind and considerate nature. He was always willing to go the extra mile to help others, lending a hand whenever it was needed.

Traveling and seeking new experiences were among Karl's greatest passions. He embraced the unknown with enthusiasm and was always up for a new project or adventure. His thirst for learning was evident in every aspect of his life.

Karl Crossen's legacy will forever be remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. He touched the lives of so many, leaving an indelible mark on all that had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories and hearts of those who loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother's sister, Kathryn (Adrian) DeGroot and his mother's brother, Robert Pieper, and his father's two (2) brothers, John (Virginia) Crossen and Henry (Jean) Crossen.

He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Beverly Asbury Crossen; children Adam (Julie) Crossen, Kendra (Matt) Carter, Cameron (Eric) Pratt, Kelly Crossen, Greg Crossen, and Donovan Crossen; grandchildren Cole Crossen, Case Crossen, Carter Crossen, Jocelyn Carter, Aiden Pratt, Evelyn Pratt, and Isabel Pratt; sisters Colleen Wirt and Kris Priester, and nieces Jessica Priester and Leslie Allen Foster, along with nephew Greg Wirt.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 28 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Dr.Crossen was a great doctor. He diagnosed my AFIB when he first started his practice in Tupelo. I feel that he actually saved my life. I hope his replacement at CANM is half as good as Dr Crossen. JL

I knew Karl in Junior High and High School. He sat in front of me ... in a portable building ... at Whitesburg Junior High. We shared a Math class and a History class, but after Junior High, he "out-classed" me and took harder classes. He and I always tried to outwit each other before our Math class in 7th grade. I think we both enjoyed our playful sparring. Occasionally I would best him, but I think Karl was the superior quipper. He and I went to Auburn, and in fact, my husband had a chemistry class with him freshman year, so I know he was adulting, with child, far earlier than I was. He was a fun, smart friend, all too briefly, for in high school our lives took that turn they so often do. I´m sorry to learn he has passed too soon, and send my condolences to those who loved, knew and cherished him.

I am blessed to have the opportunity to learn from Dr Crossen for 18 yrs at Cardiology Associates. He was a skilled physician who took pride in caring for his patients. Always looking for a better way, Dr Crossen was passionate about clinical trials and bringing the latest therapies to our area. One of the outstanding moments of my career will forever be writing a protocol for HOCM with Dr. Crossen and getting it through the FDA then published in HRS Medical Journal. Always supportive of my roles and career he was also a dear friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bev and the entire family as well as his work family. Thank you Dr Crossen for sharing your light with us.

I worked with Dr. Crossen for 25 years as his billing coder. In his first 6 months at CANM in 1998, he audited me relentlessly (definitely a Dr. Crossen move ) but he soon realized we would be a good team. I had finally gained his respect which carried on to the end. He was a brilliant physician and diagnostician always kind, willing to teach, always nurturing and of course while giving his point of view. He was the best. I will truly miss his presence, his ideas and the amazing physician he was to all. We were blessed to have known him. He cherished life, his family, his patients and of course moon pies. Rest well~

Watching him swim at our neighborhood community pool Whitesburg in Huntsville Alabama when we were early teens. He swam so effortlessly and was incredible. Super nice guy! He lived right across the street from me. Sounds like he had an amazing life. Heaven has another angel.
