Robert Shawn Satterfield, age 47, passed away in his Tupelo home on Friday, December 23, 2022 after a sudden heart attack. Shawn was a bright, happy child who spent his early days running the hills of Detroit, Alabama with his cousins. He was always ready to protect his fellow grocery store patrons in his superhero underoos, and in time became his own sort of superhero to those who loved him. He was creative and had a loving, generous heart. His encyclopedic knowledge of comics, Star Wars, and Marvel movies was unmatched, and his love of family translated into a devotion for Alabama football and the Tennessee Titans, which he shared with his parents, brother, cousins, and grandparents. Roll tide.
Shawn was happiest in his cowboy boots telling stories, cracking jokes, and enjoying good food with friends and family. He loved his Granny's cooking, especially anything fried with an extra helping of love, which he enjoyed enthusiastically with his Papa. His lifelong bond with his Mama was truly special, and they were together through all the seasons of his life. Above all, he was proudest of his two beloved baby girls whose photos cover the walls of his bedroom.
Shawn was born on April 10, 1975 in Amory, Mississippi. After attending Tupelo High School, he earned an Associates Degree at Northeast Mississippi Community College and studied graphic design at The University of Southern Mississippi. He went on to work as an illustrator and graphic designer in Dallas, TX and Atlanta, GA. Following a brain injury in 2009, Shawn received extraordinary care at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. His family is grateful for the additional 13 years he had in Tupelo, where he was lovingly cared for by his mother and stepfather. There he enjoyed checking out the new arrivals each Wednesday at the local comic book store and continuing his lifelong love of movies, art, and music.
Shawn will also be remembered for his irreverence and preference for authenticity over formality. In recent years, Shawn was fond of answering "I'm still kicking" with a smile when asked how he was. Now that he has kicked the ole' bucket, we think he would be honored for his friends and family to attend his celebration of life in the attire of their choice (including Bama or Titans gear, superhero shirts, or cowboy boots). Out of respect for Shawn, those who show up in Ole Miss, Auburn, or Cleveland Browns attire may not be admitted.
Shawn was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Satterfield, and his grandparents, Windell and Marilyn Satterfield, Cleo Keith, and Clytee Keith Taylor. He leaves behind two daughters, Kaitlynn Duke (Phillip) of Tupelo, Sofia Satterfield (and her mother Sarah) of Decatur, Georgia; his mother and stepfather, Sonya and Ronnie Keith of Tupelo; grandparents, Jack and Sarah Crowley of Columbus, MS; two sisters, Kasie Bennett (Charlie) and Savannah Gress (Aaron); a brother, Max Satterfield (Carrie), three grandchildren (Dorothy Parish, Charlie Sudduth, and Rosemary Duke), and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces who loved him dearly.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 30, 2022 in the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to service time Friday only. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to The Shepherd Center, 2020 Peachtree Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30309-1465 in Shawn's name.
