Walter Saxon Obituary

BATON ROUGE – Walter Leon Saxon, 70, passed away at home after a lengthy illness Sunday, August 31, 2014. Visiting hours will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, La., on Saturday, September 6, 2014, beginning at 10 a.m. Funeral services will follow at noon from the Chapel of Resthaven Funeral Home. Interment and private family graveside service will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
Walter, a resident of Baton Rouge since 1983, was born to the late John Henry Saxon and Margaret Sanford Saxon on August 16, 1944. Walter grew up in Tupelo and graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science degree where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was an avid Mississippi State fan, was member of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War where he earned the Bronze Star Medal. Walter was a District Sales Manager and retired from Lucent Technologies after spending over 30 years working for South Central Bell, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies.
He enjoyed reading and cooking. He loved the outdoors and spent much time doing activities such as snow skiing, gardening, relaxing on the beach or loading up and taking RV trips. He enjoyed golfing, especially with his Lake Bruin buddies in the North-South Tournament twice a year. Walter's great joy was watching his grandsons, John and Collin, play sports regardless of the weather or how he felt.
Walter is survived by his wife, Janie Horton Saxon; son, John Scott Saxon and wife, Tara; grandsons, John James Saxon and Collin Scott Saxon; and aunt, Margaret Saxon Towns.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I became friends with Walt through the North vs. South Golf Tournament at Lake Bruin and always enjoyed his company. I found him to be a true southern gentleman. I know he will be missed.

Although I've not seen Walter in 48 years, I'm truly saddened to learn of his passing. Seeing the look on his face in this photo, it's as if we just spoke last week in the living room of the Sigma Chi house; and immediately I remember what a great person he was!

My heart goes out to his family and friends. How fortunate we all were to have known Walter Saxon as we did!

Janie, Scott, and grandsons, I went from grammar school through graduation with Walter. In 1970, Scott, your mom and dad moved to B'ham and my ex and I moved there as well, living not very far from one another. You and my youngest son, Jeff, were born just a few days of one another. We got together a lot during the 3 years that you all lived there. I always loved your dad. Didn't see him except at reunions but kept up with him through Billy Ford. He will be missed but is in a better place and definitely not suffering any more.

Peace in Christ
