Waymon Lamar Self

1927 - 2025

Waymon Lamar Self, age 98, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025 at Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born March 19, 1927 to Hubert and Josie Self. He went to school at Turnpike School from 1933-1941. At the age of 15, he joined Turnpike Baptist Church. When Lamar was 18, he served in the U.S. Army for 18 months. He moved to Washington, DC in 1951 to marry Vera Dearman, on March 25, 1951. They moved back to Pontotoc in 1957. They were married 53 years, when she passed away on January 3, 2005. He was the neighborhood handyman, he could fix about anything. He did plumbing, electrical and carpentry work. He loved working outside in the garden and flower beds.

Services will be at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.J. McVay and Rev. J.T. Pennington officiating, burial will follow in the Turnpike Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home is honored to assist the Self family with the arrangements.

Survivors include his two children, Terry Lamar Self (Jill) and Becky Hellums; his sister, Lilly Ashworth; seven grandchildren, Ronnie Self (Rachel), Sam Self (Amanda), Sandy Pennington (J.T.), Misty Brown, Anthony Black (Emily), David Hellums (Jana) and Jeremy Hellums (Laura); 21 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and the Mother of his children, Vera Self; and wife Sue Chilcoat Weidman Self; and a grandson, SSGT John T. Self; one sister, Mary Graham; and four brothers, Bill, Vardie, Laron and Aaron Self.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Self, Anthony Black, Sam Self, David Hellums, Jeremy Hellums and Kaleb Pennington.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 P.M., Monday and from 1 to 3 P.M., Tuesday, all at the funeral home.
