Thomas Jimison Obituary
Murfreesboro, TN
Thomas Pearson Jimison III of Murfreesboro, TN passed away at age 75 on September 14th after a long illness. He was a loving husband, stepfather, brother and friend. Tom worked as a professor of photography, and was curator of the Baldwin Photo Gallery at MTSU for 26 years.
Born and raised in eastern NC, he served as an Army Combat Photographer in Asia and Europe in the 1960's, and earned his MA and MFA in photography through the G.I. Bill. After several years of university teaching, he opened a photo studio in New Orleans where he became a renowned food and architectural photographer.
During his 34 years of teaching, Tom was beloved by his students, who were tickled by his dry sense of humor and called him "Mr. J." He was a dedicated and inspiring teacher who launched many careers in photography.
Throughout his career, he continued his own personal work, which was included in numerous publications and was exhibited both nationally and internationally. Bodies of work include Before They Vanish: Images of the American South and The American South and Southwest.
He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Louise (Freeman) Jimison and is survived by his wife Mary Alice Rouslin, his stepdaughter, Bethany, his sister Brandon Donaldson and her husband Jack.
A Celebration of Tom's Life and Work will be held at the Baldwin Photographic Gallery on Tuesday, September 26th, 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the Bragg Media & Entertainment Building at MTSU. For more biographical information visit http://baldwinphotogallery.com/

I fondly remember sitting in a blues bar with Tom, during an SPE Conference, while he sipped a bourbon, listened to music, and with dry anecdotes kept us laughing till closing. Another year found us doing the same in a hotel room looking at work, talking about photography till everyone was exhausted, but exhilarated at the same time. Curators often have to put their own work aside, so as to better promote others, and to reduce conflicts of interest with their colleagues. Tom was aware of this, and was selfless in his service to photography, his students, colleagues, and the photographers whose work he exhibited. I'll miss you Tom.
