Santa Maria, CA - David Downey, 69, died July 19, 2021 at Santa Maria, California.
He was born on December 16, 1951 in Dodge City, Kansas the son of Edward and Neva Downey of Wright, Kansas.
David spent his childhood in Wright, Kansas. He attended St. Andrew grade school; he graduated from St. Mary of the Plains High School, 1969 in Dodge City, Kansas. David then moved to San Francisco, California; he worked in the Food and Restaurant business. Later he moved to Carmel, Carmel Valley, and Sea Side, California. He worked at, then managed, the well known "Tinnery Restaurant" in Monterey for many years. He then worked at the Pebble Beach Golf Resort Club, until retirement. He was a Banquet Chairman, overseeing some of the large convention dinners held there. David especially enjoyed serving the Ladies Bridge Club Luncheons. After retirement he moved to Santa Maria, California, a more quiet and restful community.
David liked the theater and the arts, musicals and comedy, seeing many of the well-known Broadway shows, Symphonies and Operas. He traveled throughout his lifetime to many countries, including Europe, China, Canada and the USA. David especially enjoyed Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, almost every January. He made many trips back to Kansas for family events.
David loved nature, hiking and adventure. He loved his animals, cats and dogs, and especially his dog Sidney. He was an interesting and fun person to be with. He loved his family and many friends.
Survivors are two sisters, Sharon (Sherry) Batman, Ingalls, Kansas and Carol Jean (Jeannie) Downey, Wright, Kansas; sister-in-law, Celeste Downey, Hutchinson, Kansas; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and his close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, James (Jim) Downey, and a nephew, Byron Downey.
Private services were held in Santa Maria, California. A gathering will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Wright, Kansas with Fr. Ted Stoecklein presiding, burial will follow in the St. Andrew Cemetery. There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.
