Barbara Carothers Obituary

Barbara Noel Burns Carothers died Monday, April 21, 2008, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center following a brief illness.
Memorial services for Mrs. Carothers will be 11 a.m. today in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church in Dothan with the Revs. Allie Freeman and Jim Sanders officiating. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to service time in the Church Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the United Methodist Church Building Fund or United Methodist Children's Home or Barbaro Memorial Fund.
The younger daughter of Lucy Young McEntyre Burns and William Merritt Burns, Mrs. Carothers was born on Christmas day in Johnstown, Pa. Her family relocated to Dothan, where her ancestors had been among the city's founding pioneers. Her great-grandfather, Jim Young, served several terms as Dothan's mayor and also as marshall. Young Junior High School bears the name of Mrs. Carothers' ancestors.
Mrs. Carothers attended Dothan High School and graduated from Gulf Park School for girls in Gulfport, Miss. She graduated from Auburn University as an English major and received her master's degree from Troy State University. She was an active member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority.
Following her marriage to Joe Carothers, she taught in the Auburn Public School System, Houston County Schools at Rehobeth and Ashford and at Cloverdale in the Dothan School System.
Mrs. Carothers served as secretary-treasurer of Burks Trading Company Inc., a family-owned farming operation begun in 1932 by her grandfather, Dr. Thomas McEntyre. For many years she was a member of the Alabama Legislative Wives Club, The National Society, Daughters of The American Revolution, as well as the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She was an accomplished equestrian and a dedicated water skier. She loved Auburn sports and was a faithful fan her entire adult life. She was an avid golfer and was a member of the Ladies Golf Association of the Dothan Country Club.
Mrs. Carothers' love of sports was exceeded only by her love for her family and church, First United Methodist Church of Dothan, where she served as treasurer of the Kay Williams Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Joe Robins Carothers Jr.; two sons, Joe Robins Carothers III and his wife, Jerri, and Merritt Burns Carothers and his wife, Paula; two grandsons, Joe Robins Carothers IV and Zachary Merritt Carothers; one granddaughter, Katherine Young Carothers; and one sister, Lucy Young Reeves; special friends, Henry and Liz Mouring all of Dothan.
Ward Wilson Funeral Home and Crematory at Memory Hill Cemetery, (334) 792-4194, is in charge of arrangements. Sign the guest book at www.dothaneagle.com.

Dear Carothers Family-
Our thoughts are with you and our hearts are heavy....
I remember Ms. Barbara as an accomplished, educated woman who adamantly stood for what she believed. She passionately loved her family! I remember that she would always keep Mr. Joe straight on the facts about their beloved family members, and she would proudly tell anyone about them at any given time.
Ms. Barbara and I definitely shared a love for all things Auburn! Our countless trips to the Plains in support of our Auburn Tigers will always be fond memories from my childhood.
Ms. Barbara will be sorely missed by many. Continue to keep her light burning....
