Charles Lewis Cox Sr.

Charles Lewis Cox Sr. left this world to be with our Lord and Savior on Dec. 11, 2007. He was 78.
A memorial service is planned at 2 p.m. Dec. 22, 2007, at the Daleville First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Daleville First United Methodist Church, 44 South Daleville Ave., Daleville, AL 36322, or to the Alzheimer's Resource Center, 1314 Westgate Parkway, Dothan, AL 36303.
He graduated from Gate City High School, Gate City, Va., in 1947. He was a 26 year Navy and Army veteran with three tours in Vietnam and a tour in Germany. From 1947 to 1950, he served aboard the USS Leyte Aircraft Carrier. He joined the Army in 1957, retiring in 1980 at the rank of Master Sergeant. He was awarded the Navy Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and numerous awards from his Army service including the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal with Seven Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with 10 Campaigns, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He earned the Air Assault Badge and was with the 11th Air Assault on the U.S. initial deployment to Vietnam. He held life memberships in the Disabled American Veterans, Non-commissioned Officers Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
After military service, he worked at Fort Rucker as a civil servant from 1980 until 1992. He was a Shriner and life member at the Alcazar Ambassador Club. A Master Mason, he was a 55-year member of Catlett Lodge #35, Gate City, Va., and a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite of the Free Masonry. He was Past President (1987) of the DOER Shrine Club, Enterprise.
Remembered by all for his love of sports and the outdoors, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. He played football for Gate City High School and was a past member of the Bass Angler's Sportsman Society. He was a member of the Senior Citizen's Nutrition Care Center, Daleville, and a member of the Daleville First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by Georgia Parks Cox, his loving wife of 57 years; two sons, Charles Cox Jr. (Linis) of Montgomery and Jackie Cox (Leila Scott) of Enterprise; two grandchildren, Kim Cox Moates (Pat) of Rome, Ga., and Aaron Cox (Ashley) of Alexandria, Va.; one great-grandson, Harris Moates; and stepgranddaughters, Kayla and Karina Scott. Also left behind are his sister, Sue Cox Peters of Dungannon, Va.; his brother, Billy Jack Cox (Wilma) of Gate City, Va.; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Zane Parks (Mae) of Nickelsville, Va., and Bob Parks (Phyllis) of Gate City, Va., and Margaret Cornett (Don) of Weber City, Va. As well, 'Uncle Chuck' will be remembered by a host of nieces and nephews and close friends from throughout his life. He was the son of the late Henry and Lucille Cox of Gate City, Va., who preceded him to heaven in 1962 and 1993 respectively. His brother, Glen Cox, also preceded him.
