Mrs. Frances Latimer Sawyer, a resident of Dothan, Alabama, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 72 years old. Frances was born on November 9th 1944 to Roy M. Latimer and Elizabeth T. Latimer of Alexander City, Alabama. She grew up in Alexander City and graduated from Benjamin Russell High School. She attended the University of Alabama where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in French and English. She taught French at Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham. Frances was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at University of Alabama where she met her husband of 50 years, Dr. James A. Sawyer, III. They began their married life in Birmingham, AL where her husband, Dr. Sawyer completed his medical training with a fellowship in cardiology. They moved to Dothan in 1975 when her husband began his cardiology practice. Frances participated in many community organizations including the Houston County Medical Auxiliary, The Dothan Service League and the Garden Study Club. She was involved in the formation of Chrysalis Home for Girls and served on the Board of Directors during the founding of the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Dothan. Frances enjoyed needlepoint, gardening and flower arrangement, cooking and entertaining, and spending time with family and friends. Frances Sawyer was preceded in death by her mother and father as well as a brother, Thomas M. Latimer. She is survived by her husband, James A. Sawyer and their three children, Jason Sawyer, Marc Sawyer (Carolyn) and Suzanne Bruce (Chad); Grandchildren, Libby Kate Sawyer, River Annabelle Sawyer, Emily Frances Bruce, Charles William Bruce; a brother Lamar Latimer of Birmingham. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church of Dothan with Dr. James B. Sanders, III officiating. Burial will follow at a later date, with a family graveside service at Alexander City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00pm on Thursday in the church Parlor.
