James Peele Obituary

James Andrew Peele Sr., a resident of Dothan, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at his home. He was 85.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. William Gerald Peele officiating and Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service time at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Southern Care Hospice, 2620 Montgomery Highway, Suite 2, Dothan, AL 36303.
Mr. Peele was born on July 9, 1923 in Farmville, N.C., and was raised on a family farm in Gibson, N.C. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy for several years receiving the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon. Following his service he worked for Seaboard Railroad for 14 years and later as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for over 25 years. A 50-year resident of Athens, Ga., he was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and a die-hard Georgia Bulldog supporter.
Mr. Peele was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mary, and by his brothers, Lyon and Bobby.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Delores Peele of Dothan; sons, James Peele Jr. (Christy) of Dothan, William Gerald Peele (Rachel) of Rock Spring, Ga.; daughters, Sharon Butcher (Frank) of Valdosta, Ga., Robin Dobbins (David) of Knoxville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Jack Peele of Loveland, Colo., Hubert Peele of North Carolina; sisters, Frances Keener (Bill) of North Carolina, Janet Peele of Albuquerque, N.M.; a host of nieces and nephews.
