He was born Oct. 31, 1922, in Pike County, the second of eight children to Mrs. Roberta Thornton-Tarver. Thornton was a World War II veteran, a member of both the Citizen's Watch of Saginaw and the Buena-Vista Lions Club. As an active member of St. Paul Episcopal Church of Saginaw, he served as Junior and Senior Warden, Sub-Deacon to the Priest and on the Board of Directors of the Church Housing Program.
His son, Charles L.B., predeceased him.
Surviving family members include three children, James Thornton Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Chris L.Z. of Nashville, Tenn., and Leon J. of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Henry Tarver of East Orange, N.J.; one sister, Verna Mae Fard of Cleveland, Ohio; a grandchild, Jasmine and her mother, Janice Rodman of Brooklyn, N.Y., and other grandchildren, Joslayn T. Blue and James Thornton III; many nieces, cousins, friends and nephews -- one of whom served long and unselfishly as guardian and caregiver: Jim Thornton of Baltimore.
