Patsy Ooms Obituary

Patsy "Pat" Joyce Ooms, formerly Casteel, was born May 4 1932, in Waynoka, Okla., to Walter and Maude Casteel. Around 1946 they moved to Clayton where she spent her childhood years with her four siblings, Verna Jo Landy, Walter Dale Casteel, Dennis Casteel and Kathy Davis.
Pat graduated from Deer Park High School, and received a scholarship through Hill Crest Nursing School where she attended and became a registered nurse in 1953.
Pat married Arthur C. Ooms in 1955 and they lived in Spokane, where they raised their seven children: Arthur Scott Ooms of Deer Park, James Ooms (deceased 2004), Mary A. Ooms of Spokane, Kati Dahlke (Dave) of Baraboo Wis., Heather Anderson (Clint) of Portland Ore., Shuba Asgar of New York. N.Y., and Shanta Ooms of Spokane.
Along with raising their children, Art and Pat loved animals. Anywhere from dogs, cats, pigs, monkeys to exotic birds and anything in between could be found at their home.
Pat worked at St. Luke's Hospital in the Labor and Delivery for many years, and then moved on to help open up Holy Family Hospital where she was head RN in Labor and Delivery.
Pat moved on to work at Booth, a home for unwed mothers, for a couple years, then went to work for Spokane Pediatric group where she stayed for about 17 years. She later worked for Urban Indian Health and during this time she and two other medical professionals opened up the first homeless medical clinic in Spokane, which is now known as CHAS.
Pat retired from nursing at the age of 70 in 2004.
Patsy is survived by her son, Arthur; her daughters, Mary, Kati, Heather, Shuba and Shanta; two sons-in-law, Dave Dahlke and Clint Anderson; six grandchildren, Alysia Carley (John), Shaelyn Ooms, Kendra Ooms, Skylar Asghar, Henna Asghar and Billy Asghar, two great-grandsons; Liam Ooms and Nolan Carley; her brother, Dennis; two sisters, Verna Jo and Kathy, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Patsy was preceded in death by her husband. Arthur; two sons, Patrick and James; her parents; and her brother, Dale.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Spokane Humane Society.
