Henry Clay "Mack" McCullen II
SURF CITY - Mack McCullen, age 64, of Surf City, died July 21 st from a serious hip infection, along with other complications. He was a fighter until the very end. With his family helping him throughout the journey of his recent health issues, he was finally able to let go and cross over to be with the Lord. A celebration of Mack's life will be held Saturday, August 2, at 3:00 p.m. at the Warsaw Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Andy Watkins from the Warsaw United Methodist Church officiating.
Visitation will be held after the service in the Ladies Parlor of the church. According to Mack's wishes his ashes will rest in the ocean near his home in Surf City. He was born January 3, 1961, in Durham, NC while his father was completing his Political Science degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was the son of the late Larry Phillips McCullen. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Henry Clay, his namesake, and Ozella Phillips McCullen and maternal grandparents Aubrey Allen and Selma Lee Currin. Mack spent most of his career as an Outside Sales Rep for Atlantic Appliance and Hardware in Wilmington. His territory primarily covered Topsail Island and the surrounding area. He enjoyed establishing long term relationships with the local builders and worked diligently to satisfy his customers. A sales career was a perfect match for his personality which was outgoing, funny and competitive. He graduated from Cape Fear Technical College with an Associates of Arts degree in Business Administration. He was a member of the Sneads Ferry Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. Mack and his oldest daughter Erin enjoyed volunteering at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center walking the beach to look for turtle tracks. His youngest daughter, Mackenna, enjoyed swimming competitively. Her Dad made an attempt to attend each swim meet and was her biggest cheerleader. Mack was an avid fisherman, boater, surfer, golfer and ECU Pirate Fan. He also enjoyed traveling with his daughters when they were young on family vacations to Disney, Universal, Caribbean cruises, ski trips and ECU bowl games.
He is survived by his Mother, Audrey Currin McCullen; two daughters, Erin McCullen of Jacksonville and Mackenna McCullen Hanley of Hampstead; one special grandson, Abel Hanley; sister, Renée McCullen and husband David Evans of New Bern; numerous lifelong friends that have shared the good times and the bad all the while sticking by him until the end; and Trick who is the most special dog Mack ever rescued from the shelter.
