James Hogan Obituary

Jim Hogan died of melanoma cancer on his 80th birthday, September 24, 2025. Jim was born to Jerry and Betty Hogan in Durango. He attended St. Columba then Durango High School where he graduated in 1964. In 1965 Jim joined the Navy and fueled jets on the USS Oriskany during the Vietnam War. After his 4 years of Naval service he drove a cab in San Francisco. He then moved back to Durango where he worked at the legendary Hogan's Store for 41 years.

Jim had a big heart and a beautiful smile. If there was anyone who lived in the moment it was Jim. He let problems and troubles easily roll off him which fit in with his mother's motto, "Onward through the Fog". He had a knack of endearing himself to people he just met and would become lifelong friends with them. He loved people, traveling, usually to Vegas, and his cars. He also loved to spend time with all his family. After retirement Jim had many set routines. Some said they could set their watch to his activities: there was swimming at the Rec Center at 5:30 am, then coffee club everyday at 9:30. Tuesday was time for tea with a friend. He would then spend some time watching TV. Friday was Steamworks for lunch, he loved the fries, then dinner at 636. On Saturday he would often go to the Diner for breakfast. Then off to Saturday mass.

Jim is preceded in death by his father (Jerry), his mother (Betty Gale) and his younger brother(Greg). He is survived by his sister in Oregon, Carol Hauth (Chris), sister Mary El Emrich (Scott) in Durango and his brother Brian (Jody) in South Carolina. There are many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life and a graveside service will take place next spring.

I knew Jimmy from my favorite store, Hogan´s.
I shopped there a lot. Jimmy and all the people there were the best. I always felt good shopping there. They made me feel like they really cared about me and they stood behind all the clothing they sold.

Jim was a classmate (a year ahead) at St. Columba and DHS. I saw him nearly every Saturday at Mass at Sacred Heart. I missed him at Mass lately and wondered where he was...RIP JIM, you will be missed.

We lived next door on W. 3rd and I saw Jimmy every day, when we were kids. Then, when he went to work at the store, I saw him frequently there also. I hadn't seen him recently but I think of him every time I drive past either the house or the strore. He was such a nice person and will be missed by so many. Rest in peace, Jimmy. I'm absolutely certain that the Lord will welcome you with open arms.

I met Jim in the coffee shop where he met with his cronies at least 22 years ago. I came in with my infant grandson ( now 22 years old) and Jim always had a smile and twinkling eyes for the little one. He was a lovely man and I will miss him.

I knew this sweet man as a Head Lifeguard in the wee hours of the morning. We got into a rhythm of greeting each other and then he would try to "splash" me when I was walking around on the deck. We would talk about how great he was walking (post op), he would hide his towel from his friend, and even borrow a squirt gun to try to splash another friend! BUT- ALWAYS- ALWAYS- was his gentle smile and his great chuckle!
HE was a huge reason why I chose to work the early morning shift at the pool!
