Arlene White Obituary

Arlene M. White
July 3, 1932 - April 3, 2021
Resident of Castro Valley, CA
Arlene was born in Oakland, CA to the late Frank and Helen Manha. She was the oldest of two sisters. She grew up in Oakland and always loved the outdoors and had many adventures with her friends. They called themselves the three musketeers, Arlene, Betty, and Helen. They went to the beach in Santa Cruz and to the mountains of Yosemite and still kept in touch all these years!
She married Jack White in 1952 and they had two daughters and eventually settled in Castro Valley, CA. She was a great mom and brought her love of animals, art and nature to her daughters. Many summers were spent at the beach and long treks into the foothills to pan for gold, and magical hikes into the Yosemite wilderness.
She was a lifelong learner and in her 40's went back to college to study art. She worked in retail and later at the senior center in Castro Valley. She was able to travel to Europe where she was able first hand to see the Art and beauty she loved!
She was a member of the Sierra Club and an avid Oakland A's fan going to spring training when she could.
In her later years she truly enjoyed her involvement in the spectrum senior exercise class and the friends she made.
She loved animals and always appreciated having a cat in her lap. Her garden in spring was breathtaking!
She is survived by her daughters Audrey Brennan and her husband David Victoria White. Her ex-husband Jack White, her sister Elaine Rebello and Nephew David Rebello and his wife Shelly. Her Aunt and great friend Marge Zweigle and her children Jim his wife Mercedes and Phil Zweigle. Her cousins Claudia Bergman and her husband Jim Maurreen Ginty and her husband John Mike and Terry Preston and Tom Preston.
A service will be held on May 22 at Noon at Jess C. Spencer Mortuary, 21228 Redwood Rd. Castro Valley, CA 94546.

Arlene was my cousin. She always seemed genuinely interested in sharing conversations, pottery ideas, cycling and travel adventures. She was warm and direct and made me laugh and feel welcomed from my teenage years through adulthood. She often spoke of her love for the ocean and was a free spirit walking on the beach. I always admired her witty comments and spunky attitude.
I’ll miss you, Arlene.

I was an exercise classmate with Arlene at the Ashland Community Center. We would complain if the parking lot was full or the instructor was going too fast but we loved our excuses for eating. We had once a month lunch at Harry's Hofbrau and Thanksgiving/Christmas potlucks. We noticed when someone was slowing down or needed extra help. We sang happy birthday to one another. And, we mourned the loss of one of our members. Though we have not been together in over a year, we are saddened by Arlene's passing. She will be missed.

Arlene and I bonded in our Spectrum exercise class in San Leandro. Before Covid-19, a few of us would go to lunch once a month at Harry`s Hofbrau in San Leandro, where we learned about each other. She and I were aligned politically and in attitudes generally. But she was so much more adventurous than me! I enjoyed her stories about her life. Deepest condolences to her family and friends.
