Arthur Waterson Obituary

Arthur Waterson Jr. Resident of Clayton Arthur Waterson, Jr., 81, passed away peacefully in his home on July 24, 2009. He was born in Medford, MA on December 1, 1927 to Arthur, Sr. and Loretta (Hardcastle) Waterson. Art is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Florence "Jackie" Waterson. He was the proud father of four sons, Tim, Matt, Andrew, and Mark; daughters-in-law Rena, Norma, and Diana; and eight grandchildren, Zachary, Ben, Stephen, Andrew, Conner, Cassidy, Amanda, and Nicholas. He attended Norwich Academy and graduated from Dartmouth College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He had a successful career in the commercial insurance business, retiring to Clayton to enjoy his love of the American West, sports, reading, and family. Art's interest in the West led him and family to many beautiful parks and camping as a rite of summer. His favorite park also happened to be the closest to home, Yosemite National Park. He loved the beauty of the mountains, the flowering meadows, the stunning waterfalls and never tired of the views from Glacier Point. Art loved sports, both as a participant and fan. He played golf, basketball, and baseball into his adult years. As dad to four boys, he traded in his playing days and coached all of his sons in various sports, ultimately picking up the nickname "Coach" from his sons and friends. As a grandfather, he offered tips to his grandchildren in whatever activities they pursued. Art was an avid reader, whether it was a favorite Louis L'Amour novel, a magazine, or a newspaper. He was always surrounded by a vast "library" of books, newspapers, or magazines he was reading, re-reading, or preparing to read. Art was first and foremost a wonderful husband, father, and friend. Family was the most important part of his life for him, and he passed on wonderful values to his children. He was loved and well respected by his family and friends. He will be missed by those who knew him. A memorial service is set for August 4 at 11am at St. John's Episcopal Church, Clayton, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. John's Discretionary Fund, 5555 Clayton Rd., Clayton, CA 94517 or to the Yosemite Fund, 155 Montgomery St. S.F., CA 94104 or www.yosemitefund.org.

Mr. Waterson was a great man who was like a second father to me growing up. As the "fifth son", I was always welcomed by Mr. Waterson to family events and outings and was fortunate enough to make a trip with the Waterson's to his favorite park. He will always be remembered by me as someone who has had a positive impact on my life and I have thought about his influence on me many times over the years. My condolences to his family and friends. I know he will be greatly missed. Dean Reyburn
