Barbara passed away peacefully in Concord, with her Daughters and a Granddaughter at her side. Barbara (daughter of R.W. Johnson and Laura Brewer Johnson) was born and grew up in Northern California. She went to Mt. Diablo High School and in 1947 graduated UC Berkeley. She was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority and the Berkeley Hiking Club. She Married William E. Smith of San Francisco in 1952, settled in Concord, raising a family (Stuart, Susan, Stacy and Shannon),five grand children and six great grandchildren. She loved the outdoors and was a lifetime member of the Sierra Club, founding member and 3rd president (1976) of the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association. She was a member of Save Mt. Diablo and Audubon Society. She backpacked and hiked the Yosemite backcountry, Pacific Crest Trail and most every state/national park on the west coast. She was an active member of the Concord Genealogy Society, Daughter's of the American Revolution and Mayflower Society. She loved music, opera, ballet and the symphony; played piano, recorder, autoharp, and dulcimer.
She would want us to remember her for her love of nature and support of open space.
Barbara will be returned to the elements in her favorite place on earth, the high mountains of the Sierra Nevada above Yosemite.
