Ben Detweiler Obituary

Ben Lewis Detweiler
Feb 1,1954 - Sept 27, 2014
Danville
DR. BEN LEWIS DETWEILER
FEBRUARY 1, 1954- SEPTEMBER 27, 2014
Our beloved Ben passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on September 27th.

Ben was born February 1st 1954 to Marguerite and Benjamin Detweiler in Berkeley, California, to Burton Valley in Lafayette.
In his youth, Ben was on the swim team at Rancho Colorados, played Little League baseball, enjoyed playing electric guitar with his friends in a garage band, and was active in Boy Scout Troop 243, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Ben attended Del Valle High School in Walnut Creek. While in high school, he was a member of the Varsity Water Polo team, and loved cars and car rallies-- he was forever shining up his beloved GTO. An avid skier, he relished spending time in the Tahoe area.

Ben graduated from the University of the Pacific in Stockton in 1976 with a B.S. degree. A member of Omega Phi Alpha Fraternity, he had the good fortune of making many life-long friends during his college years.

Following college, Ben attended and graduated from the University of the Pacific's Dental School in San Francisco. In 1983, he opened his own dental practice in Lafayette. Ben built a thriving local practice, and felt privileged to serve his patients over the years, many of whom were friends and family members.
In 1985, Ben married Lisa, and they eventually settled in Danville. Ben loved to hunt and fish, and golf was a favorite sport as well. Raising Vizsla hunting dogs, Raiders football, and lots of time spent at Tahoe were his favorite things.

Ben is survived by his loving and devoted wife Lisa, his mother Marguerite of Lafayette, his sister Beth Detweiler Shuman and her husband Bob Shuman of Los Altos Hills, and his niece, Katie Jo Shuman. There are many relatives of both Ben and Lisa that hold him dear. Ben was preceded in death by his father Benjamin and his brother Steve.
Ben left us all too soon, and he will be missed more than we can possibly say. He lived a very full life in his sixty years and we pray now for his peace in the life everlasting.

A celebration of Ben's life will be held in the near future

My message is long overdue, but nonetheless heartfelt - Ben was a great dentist who showed Valerie and i and our family such care and generosity over the years. He is much missed.

Dear Lisa, Peggy and Beth,
Growing up with Benny as his neighbor across the street, I have many wonderful memories. Skateboarding a slalom course on your drive way for hours, fast pitch with tennis ball on my drive way...very fun and memorable. I don't really remember Benny at Del Valle but I have such good feelings about the kind of person he was and how he made me feel. I am confident he was a great dentist because he cared. Benny, I am confident that you are enjoying the heavenly banquet and the oneness of the Universe which is Love. I miss you even though we did not stay in touch. You will always be my "across the street neighbor."

Just got the note in the mail that went out to patients and I just wanted to send my thoughts and prayers to the family. I am so sorry for your sudden losss. Dr. D was a great person, and I only knew him as a dentist. Made an impact on me with his patient, kind manner. Best to you all.

Ben was one of my oldest friends. He will be missed by all of the Meyers. He was not only a friend of ours, but our personal dentist too. It is hard for us to believe you are gone. You will be missed.

Mrs. Detweiler, Beth, and Lisa,
I have so many fond memories of Ben--going way back to playing monopoly at your Lucas Drive house. We were in the 1st kindergarten class at Merriewood and in school together all the way through Del Valle. He was a great guy.

I've known you since Mrs. Snodgrass's class in second grade and Mrs. Coons class in third. You left us way too soon. Now, finally, you'll be able to play golf again. I hope you have fun having the big guy hold the pin for you. Thanks for being a great friend and a super dentist, all these years.
