Brian Shafer Obituary

Resident of Oakland Oakland, CA - Brian G. Shafer, 55, of Oakland, California died February 1, 2009 at the John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, California surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born in Troy, New York, he was the son of the late John and Rita (Kelly) Shafer. Brian was a 1971 graduate of LaSalle Institute in Troy and graduated from Siena College in 1976. Upon completion of his degree, he was employed by Rosen & Michaels as comptroller. He was also the co-owner of Shafer Hobby in Albany. He was currently employed as a Project Manager at the Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley. Prior to that he was the Director of Computer Services at the College of Business at California State University Long Beach and IT Director at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. He traveled to Africa in 1994 to help develop a computer system in Kenya. He also worked as a consultant on web site design. Brian's life was marked by his devotion to his family and friends. He loved animals and spending time in the "great outdoors". His endearing laugh, his decency toward everyone he knew, his razor sharp wit and his gentle spirit will never be forgotten. He is survived by his brother, John W. Shafer and his wife, Barbara B. Shafer of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina and his sister, Mary Ellen Scott and her husband, Gary W. Scott of Hoosick Falls, NY. He was the beloved uncle of Courtney (Frank) Kalinowski of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Betsy (Damian) Vernon of Leesburg, Virginia, Jenny Shafer of Saratoga Springs, NY and Kiersten Scott of San Ramon, California. He was the cherished nephew of the late Edward J. Kelly and friend to the late Thelma J. Riggs, both of Troy, New York and friend to the late Lynn Allison of Long Beach, Caliornia. He was honored to be godfather to Emma Faulkner, Courtney Kalinowski,Gary Remarchuk, Kiersten Scott & Deana Semenza. Brian also leaves behind his beloved "West Coast Family": Clare and Matthew Faulkner, Paula Gloeckner, Sam Jaser, Chris and Annette Lewis, Charles and Marlene Meng, Dana and Todd Trotter, Patrick and Joanne Wecker, Cameron and Peter Wisowaty & children Amy, Annie, Joseph, Emma, Peter, Ryan, Sean and Rachael. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 28 at 10:30 am at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Seal Beach, CA followed by a reception at Noon at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, Ca.
