Charles Birdsong Obituary

Michael passed away at the age of 38, surrounded by his family in Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital from his brave and long battle from diabetes and addiction, but not without leaving his mark on this world. His greatest assets were his sense of humor, patience and the ability to listen, for as long as it took, to anyone with a problem or just a need to talk.Michael was his happiest riding his dirt bike, downhill skiing, fishing or just being outdoors. He was very proud to be a member of union local #342 as a journeyman plumber.Michael is survived by his mother Jackie Birdsong, dad George P. Birdsong 3rd, Anne Birdsong, brother George P. Birdsong 4th and Morgan Paulson Birdsong, aunts, uncles and many cousins. He will be missed by so many.A Celebration of Michael's Life will be held May 7th from 1-4pm at Moraga Country Club.Soar with the eagles Michael and look after us, we love you.The hospital staff cared for Michael with compassion, dignity and love; as well as his family. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel.In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to: Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Foundation, 1111 Sonoma Avenue, Suite 302, Santa Rosa, California 95405. www.givetomemorial.org

My son, and Michael's Orinda classmate, Kurtis Kessler, just told me about this yesterday. I am devastated and my heart is broken for everyone in his life and whom he touched. My deepest condolences for his parents, he was a gift to us all.

I only knew Mike as someone who brought comfort to my struggles. I have never seen him impose a moment of grief or displeasure towards anyone. I watched him fight his battles in life and had the gift of walking beside him while I fought my own. I met him in an environment of positivity and witnessed his courage to grow in it. I take his bravery and what I have learned from him with me. I'm sorry for his family. I know he loved you very much and spoke of you to me often and lovingly.

Kindest Regards,
Rafi Alami

I met Mike at Olympia House. He was everyone´s friend. He had a way of making people feel special and listening to them. We all used to play volleyball together. And even though he was very athletic - he was so inclusive I didn´t feel reprimanded for not being very good. I know he fought very hard in these last years. My own struggle with addiction landed me in the hospital in October. My heart goes out to the family. What a loss of a kind person.

I thought a lot of Michael today and have recalled the time we spent together as his next door neighbor growing up in Orinda. I always admired his sense of adventure and courage. I am sorry I couldn´t be at the memorial to share memories and extend my condolences.
