Chester McGlockton Obituary

Chester McGlockton Sept. 16, 1969 - Nov. 30, 2011 Resident of Danville Born the second of three children to Mr. H. Leon McGlockton and Mrs. Hazel McGlockton in Whiteville, North Carolina on September 16, 1969, Chester Morris McGlockton was frequently described as "a man among boys" in his youth for both his physical stature and his generous heart. Known affectionately as "Big Chet," McGlockton was a dominating force throughout his four-year playing career at Whiteville High School in the mid-1980s. Towering at 6-foot-5, 285 pounds, Chester helped lead the Whiteville High Wolfpack to a 51-5 record during his years there, including his standout 1987 senior season where the Wolfpacks captured the state 2A championship with a 15-0 record. For his high school football achievements, Chester earned secondteam USA Today All-American honors and still holds the North Carolina Prep record for interception returns for touchdowns with nine. At Clemson, he excelled as an All-Atlantic Coast Conference defensive lineman. Although red-shirted his freshman season, Chester became All-American after tying the regular season ACC record with six sacks and then had an outstanding seventh sack in Clemson's bowl victory over West Virginia where he also recovered the ball for a touchdown in his first playing season in 1989. From 1989 to 1991, Chester helped the Tigers post a 29-6-1 overall record, including an impressive 9-2-1 1991 season to win the ACC Championship. Chester was an important ingredient in Clemson leading the nation in total defense in 1990 and in rushing defense in 1991. In just three years of play at Clemson, he amassed 20.5 sacks, still eighth all-time in Clemson history. Foregoing his senior season, Chester became the 1st round draft pick by the then Los Angeles Raiders in April 1992. He played six seasons with the Raiders who moved to Oakland, earning all four of his Pro Bowl appearances with them, before moving on to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets, where he ended his career. In all, he played 12 seasons, amassing 51 career sacks, including a career season high 9.5 with the Raiders in 1994 where he also had three forced fumbles and 48 tackles. It was in Los Angeles where Chester met the love of his life, Zina Moore. Swept away by a smile that warmed her heart and big hugs and kisses that charmed her life, Zina took to calling her gentle giant "Shooby." The happy couple wed in holy matrimony on July 7, 1996 and, to this union, two beautiful daughters, Skylar Alexis and Sierra Ashley, were born. Having confessed Jesus as his Lord and Savior, Chester lived a fulfilling life. He was a member of Glad Tidings Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop J.W. Macklin in 1996 and then Well Christian Community Church led by Pastor Napoleon Kaufman after moving his family to Danville, California. Choosing to lead by example, Chester was the consummate big brother who always had coaching guidance, spiritual advice and an infectious smile to lend to others. Mentoring young players and helping them to reach their NFL dreams led him to coaching. At the start of 2009, he was an assistant defensive coach with the University of Tennessee Knoxville football team and simultaneously earning his Bachelors degree in 2010 at the University of Tennessee Martin. It was also the same year that he became a defensive assistant coach at Stanford and worked under the leadership of Coach David Shaw. More than that, Chester was dedicated to guiding young people to a more fulfilling and purposeful life. Through the Chester McGlockton Fundation, he never abandoned his native Whiteville, North Carolina. He provided shoes and uniforms to his Whiteville High School basketball team for more than a decade, even buying championship rings for the entire team and its cheerleaders in 2000. He also bought cleats for the football team every year. He leaves to cherish his memory: his lovely and devoted wife Zina, two daughters Skylar Alexis (10), Sierra (6); his parents H. Leon McGlockton, Jr., (Doris) and Ms. Hazel McGlockton; four siblings; H. Leon "Lee" McGlockton, III, (Shalae), Tiffany McGlockton, Justin McGlockton and Shenea McGlockton; three nephews Devin, Axiom, Thymond and two nieces Ava and Hannah; Parents inlaws Joseph & Dorothy Moore and many family and friends. Funeral: Services were held, Monday, December 5, 2011, Glad Tidings Church of God in Christ, 27689 Tyrrell Ave., Hayward, CA. Viewing: 9 am. Funeral Services: 11:00 am. LIVE WEBCAST - www.gladtidingscogic.org Interment Entrusted to Millican Cemetery, Whiteville, NC.

Well. Being ran over for the first and only time in my entire high school career was very embarrassing. But if had to be done again i would want it to be chet. It was a very humbling moment to say the least. It was a trick play with big chet doing a end around and i was the linebacker on the opposing team. I went a 100 miles a hour at chet just as i would anyone else as soon as i saw him turn the corner knowing this was going to be the next David and goliath story. Well it didn't work out to be that way. Chet put his foot print all over the front of.my jersey before i saw from laying on my back him going into the end zone. Tiffany and Leon your brother is and always will be the greatest in my eyes. I was and still is his biggest fan. My love goes out too the entire family. He is in heaven now. I pray that i meet him again. But not on that 20 yard line. But were God have stored up mansions for us. Love yall and be strong. Remember. The battle is not yours. Its the Lord's. Jesus is the way the truth and light. No one comes to the father but by him. God bless

I am just a regular guy, but Chester was a STAR in every sense of the word, yet he was the most humble and descent man I have ever known. He loved his Wife, girls, family and friends with a love only God could have shown and given unto him. I will always remember him as a STAR, but not of football...a STAR of God, annointed by God to show other men how to live and love according to God's word. I will miss you Chester.

I want to thank Chester for the time he spent with me when I was first traded to the Oakland Raiders. Traded from the Carolina Panthers, I was 3,000 miles from home and didn't know a soul. This guy that I didn't know and wasn't on team any more made time for me. Not often do men go out of their way to help another man especially a stranger. Thank you Chester for your kind heart, your memory will live as an Oakland Raider forever, but more important you will be in the hearts of RaiderNation and every person you came in contact with, including Jarrod Cooper.
