Donald Minkler Obituary

Donald H. Minkler, M.D. Feb. 19, 1922 - May 4, 2007 Former Resident of Orinda Don Minkler died peacefully on the night of his 61st wedding anniversary. Born in San Francisco to Jay and Zelda Minkler, Don's early years were spent in San Francisco. He was cheerleader and student body president of the Lowell HS class of 1939-40, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UC Berkeley in 1943. After his marriage to Elizabeth "Betsy" Van Gorder in Boston in May of 1946, Don graduated from Harvard Medical School, class of 1947. Upon completing his residency at UCSF, Dr. Minkler practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Berkeley for the next 15 years. His medical partnership in Berkeley was the first to promote the participation of fathers in the delivery room. Dr. Minkler's special interest in international women's health began in 1968, when he left private practice to obtain his Master's Degree in Maternal and Child Health. From 1969 to 1971, he was visiting professor at Makerere University in Uganda, and from 1971-1973 was the Medical Advisor of the USAID Office of Population in New Delhi, India. His passion for global travel and health care led to his work as a consultant on international women's health in numerous developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Don was a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UCSF and UC Berkeley at the School of Public Health. He served on the Board of Directors of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Pathfinder International. From 1983-1989, he was Co-Director of the Center for Reproductive Health Research and Policy. He was a pioneer of innovations in women's health care and was a champion of choice and family planning. Don was known professionally and personally by many as a gentle, optimistic, kind and loving man. His infectious humor, love of poetry and warm smile were treasured by family and friends. Don was on the founding Board of the Alzheimer's Services of the East Bay. Shortly thereafter he began his own struggle with Alzheimer's, as well as Parkinson's disease and Primary Progressive Aphasia. He lived with great dignity, courage and patience with these diseases for the last 12 years of his life. He is survived by Betsy, his beloved wife of 61 years; four children, John Minkler (Mary Lou) of Fresno, Bonnie Bollwinkel (Mark) of Los Altos, Katie Minkler-Greene (Bruce) of Portland, Oregon, and Jennifer Hanson (Michael) of San Ramon; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his younger brother; Jay Minkler of Livermore; brothers-in law, Robert Van Gorder of Cromwell, Connecticut, and Michael Chambers of Hamilton, Montana; sister-in-law, Barbara Coffin of Suffield, Connecticut; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Roy Minkler. The family would like to thank his devoted caregiver of the last four years, Aster Abraham. Donations in his honor may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area or the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. A celebration of his life will be held at the UC Berkeley Faculty Club, July 22, 3-6 p.m.

Dr. Minkler was my physician when I was a student at Cal in the 1960s. It was an interesting time to come of age, and he was known among us young women for his understanding and compassion. I was not surprised to read in the newspaper biography about his subsequent public health career. Sincere condolences to the family and friends.

Dearest Betsy
Mum joins me in messages of love and care to you , John, Bonnie, Katie and Jennifer at this sad time. Don was my "other" Dad and you Betsy filled Mum's role perfectly while I had the enormous pleasure of living at # 64 Roble Road with you as a Grad student at Cal. With both my Dad and now Don gone, I feel the size of that empty space which only daughters know how Dads fill that important space in their very special ways. The upside in this sad time is that you Betsy and my Mum are such beautiful, capable, strong and inspirational women who are blessed with the ability and dignity to live on, unafraid and with courage. I admire you so. Take good care of yourself Betsy. As always, Claire.

Donald Minkler was a wonderful, generous, loyal man whom provided me with emotional support when I needed it, so many years ago, when we were young. To hear that "Don & Betsy" were coming to our home-or vice versa- made for instant happiness and fun, and Donald never disappointed. He was such a gounded and solid individual, so giving to those around him, always positive and always ready to lend a helping hand. In my youth and into young adulthood, there is no more significant man in my life than Donald Minkler, a shining star no less. My(Our)world is less today without Dr. Minkler in it. I so admired this man and his lovely wife. Please accept my sympathy during this most trying time for the entire Minkler family. And my love goes to Betsy, as it always did. We'll see you in July.

Dear Betsy, John, Bonnie, Katie and Jennifer,

Even though I haven't spoken with you all for many, many years, my thoughts and prayers are with you for the loss of Don. I vividly remember (as does my entire family) the friendship that began back in the mid-fifties when my mother and father met the Minkler family. I remember summertime weekends in our backyards where the Minkler and Johnson kids got together and had fun. You were always "Don and Betsy" to us all, not Dr. and Mrs. Minkler. I will never forget those times. God Bless you all.

My uncle Don was the best! He was one of the most loving, caring and funny men I have ever known. He always had a smile on his face and a joke on his lips. The world has lost an amazing man. May his memory live on in all the lives of people he touched, I know it will in mine. I shall miss you terribly Uncle Don......Love always Laurie

Don was a universal man, and one of the wonderful men of global perspective who welcomed me as a young female upstart MD when I first worked at USAID. He was especially kind and supportive of the invasion of the females into population work. He was a prince and treated us with personal and professional care.
We have lost a wonderful part of our universe with his passing.

My warmest wishes to Betsy and the family. He loved you all so absolutely completely.

Best wishes,
Miriam

I had the privilege of photographing Don for an article on Alzheimers in June of 2001. I thought the family might like the photo, so I've uploaded it here. If you'd like to have hard copy, or other photographs from that day, please feel free to contact me: [email protected]

Congratulations to Don on an amazing life well lived.

I was fortunate to have you as my OB doctor during my childbearing age. Secondly it was an honor working as an RN caring for your patients at Alta Bates. We miss your expertise, kindness, caring and your million dollar smile. You were a special part of my life.
