Eric Hammerquist Obituary

Eric Hammerquist
August 16, 1947 - April 27, 2021
Resident of Berkeley, CA
Eric Hammerquist, born 8/16/1947 to Marian Lott and Harry Beem Hammerquist, passed 4/27/2021 surrounded by family at home in Berkeley, CA.
Eric was raised by family after the tragic death of both parents. His maternal aunt Olga and husband Mike Douderoff, and his paternal uncles Emerson and Joe Hammerquist and their respective wives Bernice and Peggy, helped him through his youth.
A graduate of Berkeley High School, he joined the Peace Corps in 1965 where he fell in love with India, Nepal, and finally Geraldine Kaplan. Together they birthed Merlyn Messenger. Eric returned to India regularly, especially to care for a family he adopted. Eric was a free spirit in the mold of Berzekely, as he called it. He was a kind-hearted person, who was curious and enjoyed people. He loved maps, geography, history, and was drawn to the stories of Julius Caesar, the Roman ruler, and dreamed of being a history professor. Eric is preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers, and his wife. He is survived by his son Merlyn.
Eric will be so missed by his family.
There will be a private ceremony in late June to Celebrate his Life.
