Our dear mother, Florence passed away peacefully on Saturday evening after spending the day surrounded by loved ones. She had waged a battle against Alzheimers for several years but seemed to emerge in her final hours.
Florence is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, John C. Vallor, parents G.Archie and Bess Gillis and her brother Don Gillis. She is survived by her 6 loving children - daughter Elizabeth Naughton and sons John, Robert (Michele), Joseph (Cheryl), Gregory (Rose) and Daniel (Shannon); grandchildren Charles (Charlene), Christopher (Alisonn) and Timothy (Katie) Naughton, Cynthia (Jeremy) Calhoun, Scott and Sarah Vallor; Christin Vallor and Megan (Jon) Rivas; John (Megan) and Michael Vallor and Fiona Vallor and eight great-grandchildren.
Florence had a vibrant and giving spirit and was often described as the epitome of "nice." She loved life and people and was completely devoted to her husband and children. She was born in Seattle, WA and was raised primarily in central Washington - Entiat and Wenatchee. After working for a time in Seattle she joined the Red Cross during World War II and was sent to Hawaii. She subsequently got a job managing the club at Ft. Douglas, Utah where she met John, a Major in the U.S. Army. They married and began a life that included living in Germany, France and various areas of the United States.
She was inquisitive, always eager to learn and had boundless energy. Over the years it became hard to count the number of organizations that she joined. Locally she was a founding member of the Virginia Hills Women's Club, and held various offices in Retired Officer's Wives, the Genealogical Society, Quilters Guild and Concord Garden Club. She also volunteered at Friends Outside. An accomplished pianist she played at Christ the King Church until retiring at around 85 years old.
We have been truly blessed to have had her in our lives and to have loved her as much as we do.
Visitation will be at OAK PARK HILLS CHAPEL, 3111 N. Main St., Walnut Creek, Friday, June 12th from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m.. Please join us for a Funeral Mass and celebration of her life at Christ the King Catholic Church, 199 Brandon Rd., Pleasant Hill on Saturday, June 13th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette.
