Garret Conklin Obituary

Garret Conklin
Oct 2, 1946 - June 22, 2013
Resident of Alameda
Garret Conklin, long-time resident of Alameda, passed away on June 22, 2013. He will be missed by his wife Shirley, siblings Carroll, Grace, Earle, Alice, Mike, numerous nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends.
Garret was a true patriot. He served our country in Vietnam as a radioman aboard the USCG Taney. He was a ham radio operator and used his communication skills as an Alameda CERT volunteer and dispatcher with the Oakland PD.
Whether he was working as an airplane mechanic, ship supervisor or bartending, he always loved to share a good story with his many friends. Garret lived his life to the fullest, sailing around the world, working the race car circuit in England, baking sourdough bread, restoring his old VW bug and spending time with his compadres.
A party is being planned for friends and family to gather and celebrate Garret's life. Garret's wish was that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Sentinels of Freedom, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide life-changing opportunities for men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who have suffered severe injuries and need the support of grateful communities to realize their dreams.

It's always sad to see a fellow crew member of the USCGC Taney pass, I didn't know Garret but he was a fellow brother as are all Coast Guardsmen. He did a great service to other crew members of the USCGC Taney by maintaining the Taney web page. My heart felt sympathy goes out to his wife Shirley and his family. Fair Winds and Flowing Sea's Shipmate, you'll be missed, but not forgotten.

Garret will always be Garry to me. We met while serving overseas aboard the Taney. Every day at sea or in a foreign port was an adventure shared with my friend I won't soon forget. After the Coast Guard came serious life changes, yet the friendship carried-on. God bless you Garry.

I am very sad, as are so many others, to lose such a good friend who was the essence of a "true blue" friend to all those he cared about.

We were very surprised and shocked to read about the passing of Garret ... Our hearts go out to Shirley and Garret's families ...

Laughter, good times, awesome adventures, relaxing, and sadness are just some of what life has in store for us ... May the good times over shadow the difficult times, and may you find comfort in the memories you shared ...

I am so sorry to hear Garrett has passed. Prayers to his family! I worked with Garrett at OPD Communications and he had such a good spirit, we shared many laughs in the kitchen as he would always be in there studying when I walked in. So sad to hear this.
