Gilbert Marguth Obituary

Gilbert R. "Gib" Marguth Mar. 4, 1934 - Aug. 19, 2011 A Resident of Livermore For 50 Years, Gib passed away peacefully after 10 years of an optimistic and inspirational response towards cancer treatment. Gib is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Marjorie, his children, Nancy, Karen, and David, and 7 grandchildren, Kathy, Danielle, Joseph, Megan, Erin, Nicole, and Tyler. He's also survived by his sister Shirley, one great-grandchild, a niece, and several nephews. Gib was born March 4, 1934 in Portland, Oregon. After graduation from Parkrose High School in 1952 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served 4 years as a link flight-trainer instructor. He was discharged as a SSGT and went on to attend Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. He graduated from OSU in 1960 with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. His professional accomplishments include tenures at Sandia National Lab, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, National Renewable Energy Lab, CH2M Hill, and he co-founded and operated Livermore Data Systems. He also served his community as a School Board Member, City Councilman, Mayor, and Zone 7 Board member. He was elected to the California State Assembly in 1980. After his term in the Assembly, he was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of California. Gib not only served his community as an honorable leader, he was also a tireless supporter of his family and church. He dedicated time to his children's social and sports activities, and served the church as an elder, leading projects and teaching Sunday school. A mentor to so many, he was always willing and generous with his time. His favorite vacation spot was Maui where he would retreat with dear friends and family. He enjoyed golfing in his younger years, and was a life-long passionate fan of the Golden State Warriors, Oakland A's and Oregon State Sports. To Gib, the glass was always half full. He was a kind man with a positive attitude and endless energy. He loved to solve problems and would always be the first to offer help with solutions. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. Gib lived a life filled with kindness and genuine respect for others. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family. He was "Our Superman." Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church in Livermore, 2020 5th Street, on Saturday, September 10th, at 11:00am.
