Gilbert Marguth Obituary

Gilbert "Gib" R. Marguth, a former California assemblyman for the 15th District, died in Livermore on Friday after a nine-year battle with leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

He was 77.

The Livermore native is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie, and three children, Nancy, Karen and David.

Marguth, who was born in Portland, Ore., was known for his work as an assemblyman, but his family and closest friends remember a father with a strong bond to his community and his loyalty.

Dear Marguth Family, I worked with Gib at LLNL and remember him well. He was always there if you needed help and as recently as a couple months ago I called him for help in resolving a retiree health plan problem. Again he was there to help and did. Please accept my deepest condolences. Gib will be missed. Allen Levy

Dear Mrs. Marguth and family, I will always have fond memories growing up next to your family. I remember my parent's supporting Mr. Marguth's campaign with signs in our front yard. Your home was always welcome to the neighborhood kids. I am so very sorry for your loss and know you have many wonderful memories to treasure.

Dear Marj: The last time I saw Gib was at our class reunion and I'm a hugging individual, and he was the only one who returned the hug. That made me feel really good. Our visit brought back a lot of good memories of our youth. We all had quite a history together. I know that he will be missed. I hope that your good memories will be a comfort to you in the days ahead. I am so sorry.

I only met and knew Gib recently but I ALWAYS knew his name in this town. I thought I could not know someone who had such a reputation as a community person. When I met and talked to him, I realized what a great guy I had missed over the years and I was indeed worthy to have known him. He was a standout to me and I am pleased to have had that time. I'm sorry that you will be without him. He made a difference and at is any of us wants to do.

I taught at Parkrose High School when Gib was there long ago. After that I moved to California and resumed my art and mechanical drawing teaching at Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek. I have not forgotten him. Always a leader.

To Marj and family,

Even though it has been many years, when I drove thorough Livermore this past Saturday, I started thinking about Gib and wondering how you all have been. I was saddened to read today of his passing on Friday. As a then-recent college graduate anxious to impress the world with my new Political Science degree, I was very fortunate to have learned about and helped Gib with his Assembly campaign in 1980. Little did we know, we were all on the front lines of the "Reagan Revolution." God bless you all and thank you for sharing with many that wonderful man with the funny name.
