Helene Fisher Obituary

HELENE DORIS (FELDHEYM) FISHER Passed away May 19, 2004 at the age of 81. A San Francisco native born February 15, 1923, she is survived by her brothers, Drs. Bertram and Leland Felton; daughter and son-in-law, Jill (Fisher) and Ken Granek; son, Jay Fisher and her granddaughters, Valerie, Debra and Emily. She was the widow of local dentist, Merle J. Fisher, they were married 54 years. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and valued friend, whose passions were the performing arts and providing service to others and her community. Her distinguished volunteer career began in San Francisco and included ushering at the Opera House and volunteering at the USO during World War II. Settling in San Leandro in 1953, she volunteered at Broadmoor Cooperative Nursery School and served as Roosevelt Elementary School PTA President. These two experiences were the impetus for her most treasured and lasting friendships. She held numerous leadership positions in PTA's, scouting and fraternal organizations during her children's school years. A founding member of the San Leandro Symphony Association, she served as its president and a member of the symphony Board of Directors. As President of the Southern Alameda County Dental Auxiliary, she dedicated many hours to elementary classroom education. In the 1970's Helene began her volunteer career with Vesper Memorial Hospital. In that role she initiated innovative programs to provide service for patients and their families; provided leadership as President of the Service League and a member of the hospital board. She was honored by the California Hospital Association as its Volunteer of the Year. A family service and scattering of Helene and Merle's ashes is being planned for Eureka, where they began their family. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345.

Even though I only met you twice, you were a very nice lady. I appreciate the way you always thought about my daughter as if she was your great-granddaughter. Thank you for being a friend to my mom and for being so generous.
