James Murphy Obituary

James Barrett Murphy
June 12, 1942 - August 19, 2013
Resident of Alameda
Jim, fondly called Murph by his friends, was born and raised in Alameda until his family moved to Oakland then to Fremont. After he met and married his wife, Carolyn, they moved back to Alameda where they have lived for over 47 years. Jim worked at Emerald Packaging for 38 years retiring in 2004.
Jim is survived by his wife, Carolyn, their daughter, Joelle Coghe, Carolyn's son, Paul Gross and his wife, Connie Patakas and grandchildren, Randy Coghe, Katie and Lauren Gross. Predeceased by his father and mother, James P. and Jeannette R. Murphy, son in law, John Coghe and nephew, Brad Perry, he leaves behind his sister, Susan Perry, niece Christine Perry, and stepfather, Ken Coyne. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends who loved him.
Jim became ill while camping at his favorite "home away from home", Butt Lake near Lake Almanor. He died unexpectedly a few days later. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing, hunting and shooting with his buddies. He loved cooking and sharing his culinary skills with his friends especially those at Butt Lake and the Hayward Chapter of Native Sons of the Golden West. All will agree that Murph made the best clam chowder ever!
Jim will be remembered for his strength, unselfishness, leadership, laughter and strong work ethic. He always made sure everyone else's needs were met before he did anything for himself. He was quick to give a big welcome, strong handshake or a hug. His attention to keeping things clean and tidy brought about many jokes among his friends, they will be lost without him.
Jim's Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 8, from 1-4 at Lincoln Park in Alameda. Donations can be made to: Charitable Foundation (Cleft Palate), Native Sons of the Golden West, 414 Mason St., San Francisco, CA 94102-1708, National Disaster Search Dog Foundations, 501 E. Ojai Ave, Ojai, CA 93023, Alameda Welfare Council, P.O.Box 2265, Alameda, CA 94501. For further information please call: Harry W. Greer, Funeral Director (FDR-745).

So very sad to see see this in the Alameda Sun...I will miss his booming voice at Elks Bingo! I will miss his razzing me when I would win a jackpot and visa-vera. Jim was that rare character: someone you are glad came into your life because he made the time you spent together that much richer...Rest my friend, Watch over Carolyn and your family and friends, as you step into the next room.
