Uncle Bob gathering mums

What a tough and consistent opponent on Words With Friends (online Scrabble)! I think we played together for eight years!
I remembered she used to email me, so I pulled up the old emails. Here are some of my favorite excerpts from what I found..."just for you to see" was the body of a message she sent entitled Mums and Uncle Bob with pictures of Uncle Bob gathering flowers. Then, when she was in the hospital, she had photographed the tulips someone sent and commented, "I felt as if a pink tulip was smiling at me while I ate." Love that! She made mention of the Double Delight roses at that time also.
She always had a positive attitude and something encouraging to say. Ethan and I had brought lots of food to share at the Crescent Lake, Oregon camp-out (2015 or 2016?), and she said, "What a nice thing to do!" Her email in January of 2017 on their drive to Hookipa when the they encountered turtles and a pretty rainbow, was entitled "Surprises" -how fitting!
She told me every birthday, how I shared the same birth date with her Mother; that always felt like an honor. I am grateful that I was able to grow closer to her these past several years. I hope to emulate her warm and uplifting spirit and will always remember her.

I loved to come visit Janis in her beautiful home and see all of her artistic creations, like the little velvet pillows she made. She was so full of life and always had projects going on and something cooking in the kitchen. Her special touches made that home a delight to visit and I will miss her so much, but I know her presence lives on. I'll never forget how she taught me how to play bridge, something I never thought I'd know how to do. I have fond memories of Janice and I will always treasure them!!! LOVE XOXO Nancy

My husband and I and our daughter Karen and her friend Lori Taliaferro were at the Wicks cabin on Donner Lake. We were to spend the day and bring dinner. Karen and I were in the kitchen with Lori who was working on a head of lettuce. All of a sudden Jan said "Stop," and she turned to Lori and said, "Where did you learn that?" Lori said, "From my Grandmother."
That was Jan, always adding to her vast knowledge of cooking skills.

Jan Wicks has been part of my life since I was 3 years old. My family met their family in Corvallis, Oregon in 1957 - both Bob's were in a Cold War graduate student program to create more scientists, engineers, and math teachers. Kelly was just born! and Craig came soon after.
Our families never parted from this friendship. The Wicks' moved to Walnut Creek and my family came to Bay Area in 1961. We visited often, especially for events like Thanksgiving ( who would not want to have Thanksgiving with a good cook like Jan?)
In 1968, my folks found a lot way on the far north end of Lake Berryessa, where we had already been spending summers for 6 years. They asked Bob and Jan if they would like to join us in building a cabin there, a permanent summer home for both families to share. They said yes, and off we went! That was over 50 years ago.
We built the cabin in 1970 and 1971 - how many of you reading this have been here?
It is an astounding legacy for the friendship of 2 families, and Jan of course was always a key part of this. I have countless memories of weekends up there with the Wicks, and so many other friends as well. Endless warm days, warm nights, cooking and eating on the decks, hours and hours playing our boats, lounging in waters and baking in the sun on our dock.
My life is so much richer for having the Wicks in my life, and I want to credit Jan for being the matriarch of this clan for all that time.
Your life has been such a contribution to me, Jan.
Thank you.

I met Jan and Bob when I moved into the neighborhood 16 years ago where they and my husband, Wendell have lived for over 50 years.
We didn't meet often, but when we did, Jan was warm and welcoming and enthusiastic about whatever activity she was doing. We would trade recipes and talk about cooking, which was clearly her passion. Jan was the one who introduced me to the gym at the Renaissance Hotel, where I am still a member and where I would see her on occasion on her way to Water Aerobics or holding court in the lobby with a couple of buddies. Even in the last year of her illness, Jan seemed upbeat and stalwart. I can only imagine the loss of such a warrior for you, family and friends. My heart goes out to you.
With love,
Michal

Janis will always remain in my heart; as will all of the Wicks and Garvey families. Janis had the kindest spirit and a wise wonderful generous perspective on life. Thank you Janis for all that you brought to this world. We are eternally grateful that your sweet learned energy touched our lives. Much love to Bob and family.

Janis was such a warm person always with a ready smile, and she welcomed so many of us to our favorite water aerobics classes.
We will miss her.

In lieu of the Celebration of Life, we invite you to share memories and photos here.
Mom expressed her artistic nature through what would seem like mundane "housewife" activities. Yet her talents were exceptional:
As a young bride, she sewed her wedding dress and the dresses of her bridesmaids the summer before her wedding. That wedding dress was later worn by her future sister-in-law, a family friend, and two of her daughters.
Mom was trained in the French culinary arts, and later taught French Cooking classes in her home, and in the home of a friend, for many years.
Needlework was a favorite pasttime. Mom became part of a team of needle-workers who gathered in Benitia CA to create Judy Chicago's Birth Project - a massive undertaking producing many large needlepoint murals abstractly expressing love, birth, and womanhood.
Dear mom, you added so much beauty to the world!
