After all these years I just learned of Joe's passing. Not being Internet savvy till now, I lost touch with the Roller Derby world. My belated condolences to the Perez family. I'd like to share an incident that happened so long ago. I am a life long Derby and NY Chief fan. In 1972 or 73 I was in Philadelphia visiting family. The local newspaper advertised a match between the Chiefs and Philadelphia Warriors at the Spectrum. Since I was nearby I went to the game. Imagine rooting for the Chiefs in a hostile environment. During a break in the action, Joe was resting by the rail. He looked at the crowd and our eyes met.I waved and smiled at him. To my astonishment he waved and smiled back at me. Here we are 40 years later and I can still see his beautiful smile. What a wonderful person he was. I only wished that I could have met him to tell him that.Rest in peace my friend, hope to see you up there.

I'm just a fan and never got to meet Joe but I enjoyed watching him skate, he was a wonderful and talented skater. I mainly remember him skating for the Chiefs and was fortunate to see him skate against the Pioneers in the early 70's. Being from the Midwest, I of course favored my Pioneers but I wasn't blind to the fact that Joe was one of the best jammers and skaters on the banked track. I'm saddened at his loss and the loss of any Roller Derby skater that gave me so many good memories. Thank you Joe and all of the other skaters for so many good memories. I have many tapes from 1973 on and watch them regularly, so your talent will live on for many years to come.
My condolences to Joe's family, friends and RD fans that will all truly miss Joe.

Joe, you were a Prince of the banked track, and it was always wonderful to watch you cover that terrain in such a special way, and thrill so many people with your never give up spirit. I was ever your fan, and grateful to have finally met and talked with you.

To the Perez family and everyone who loved Joey Perez. May I extend my deepest condolences. I pray that you will recieve comfort from the many entries in this guest book and please know that he is remembered with fondness and love.
I was in Jr. High and high school with Joey. Wow, the 60's.....that was a while back. He was the best and the sweetest, most fun boy. I remember his laughter and his great smile and he always said something to make us laugh. I remember girls would line up to dance with him cause he was such a smooth dancer, the best in the school and the best at the, "Texas Hop". I was so saddened when I heard about his illness and even moreso when Nina told me he had died. May you rest in peace, Joey.

My condolences especially to his brother Johnny and to his extended family. I think they were the closest at the end of Joe's life and I can only imagine the loss that his brother is feeling.
I was Joe's sister-in-law and I graduated with him from Fremont High School. We took clerical courses to work in an office when we graduated; typing and geez, so long ago, we even took shorthand. It was fun. We did our best and competed with each other, I won by the way. We liked making fun of our stuffy, proper teacher, standing up straight and pursing our lips. I remember giggling when we had to type, hearing the clacks of all of our old typewriters. Joe was very popular in school and after. He had a great personality. He loved everyone. He was a good guy. A nice guy. And always smiling. Yes, he was a fantastic dancer. I remember him wiping the sweat all the time, he had to dance with all the girls waiting in line for him. But he had fun. We all did. Dances at the Vets Hall, the Leamington Hotel. That's all we did on weekends. Go out and dance and make out at parties, oops. Fun days!
He lived his life to the fullest and still kept in touch with his family. He was very proud of his nieces and nephews. He was a responsible and loving son and took care of his mother after his father died. He went through two terrible losses.
Only God knows why he went so soon. I consoled my 30+ year-old son by telling him that God loved him more than anyone else that day and took him. That's all I could think of.
I know you're resting in peace Joey Perez. We'll always love and remember you.

Jumpin' Joe Perez was one of the hopes of the "new" Derby in the early 70's. Had the game survived, he would have been a superstar. Instead, he became (as any fan can tell you) a supergentleman, one of the kindest and most warmhearted, guileless skaters ever. We all loved him, fans and skaters alike.

It's a terrible loss. Joe was one of the best skaters around and I have many found memories of him circling the banked track. I last saw him skate in a benefit game at Hogan High School in 1991. He was a little older than the last time I saw him, but he hadn't lost a step!

JOE PEREZ was one of the unsung heros of the banked track sport, Roller Derby. Fans will never forget his intensity and fortitude, how he would get knocked down by a larger opponent at the back of the pack, bounce up immediately and continue his quest for points, never giving up, never calling it quits.
He gave fans countless thrills and memories. The achievements of Joe's remarkable life will live forever in the hearts and minds of all who love this game.
May he rest in peace.

With out a doubt one of the best skaters to ever lace them up. I skated with Joe and against him for many years, and he always offered the same encouragement, support and help to develope us as skaters. He had the respect and love of his fellow skaters as well as his fans. The derby skaters in heaven are training for their next game. What an All Star event that will be. Rest in peace Joe. Derby lost a great skater, and the world lost a great soul

Joe was one of the best skaters the New York Chiefs ever had, but that was because of the kindness he showed to so many others, skaters and fans alike. The fans out here in the East really did love him for his special way he treated so many others, which was obvious to all. God must have really needed someone so caring, thoughful and special to have taken someone so loved. I pray that his family is comforted by the tremendous love, support and honor that so many are paying to his memory, which will live on in the list of those who he touched in so many positive ways.

Joe Perez was a guy who could jam with the best of them. He provided marvelous back-up jamming support for guys like Mike Gammon & Larry Lewis, but could have easily been the top jammer on a team. He was one of the most under-rated skaters in the game and few skaters were as valuable to their team as Joe was. I am happy that he was involved in Roller Derby & thankful I was able to see him skate for so many years.

Joe,
We laughed, we ate, and most of all, we had our fun days on the track. I remember when we worked together at Pac Bell, having lunch together, then meeting each other on opposing teams, yelling at one another.
My brother, you're going to be missed physically, but mentally, I will always have memories of our good times on the track, also at Bob Dancell & Caroline's place for dinners.

I have followed Roller Derby for over 35 years and one of my all time favorite skaters was Joe Perez. When I started training at Joan Weston's training center Joe was one of the first pros I met and he immediately took me under his wing. His advise and experience was invaluable and his kindness one of a kind. I will miss his sense of humor, his incrdible skating and of course how he used to knock me on my butt in the training school. Joe you were truly one of the nicest guys in the Derby and we will all miss you!

I am very sad to hear this news. I followed Joe's skating career closely during the IRDL, ISC, IRSL, and WRF leagues. Joe was simply one of the best skaters out there. He had a lot of hustle and tenacity and was very dedicated to the game!
I am very happy there are many games available on video or DVD with Joe skating. I'll be watching some tonight.

Joe's Family,
He was one of the best skaters in the International Roller Derby League's history.
He was a member of the World Champion New York Chiefs professional roller derby team. The New York Chief fans loved and adored him as did other roller derby fans.
In 1972 he won the Red Badge Of Courage Award from his fellow roller derby skaters. Joe never quit and when you seen his name on the roster you knew you were going to be seeing a superb top notch jammer. He was an awesome skater to watch. He would get dumped and get right back up within hundreds of a second.
He was my roller derby mentor and I loved him dearly. He was a humble person. He would help all the rookie skaters and take them under his wing. He was gifted in that he knew the game and he shared his wealth of knowledge to those whom were hungry for it.
When I would tell him he was an awesome skater he would reply "all I want to be remembered as is giving it all I had". And he will be remembered as such.
My heart is sad but yet I am happy to have met him in my lifetime. I wish I would have known sooner because I would have made it a point to attend to his services tonight.
