John Hauer Obituary

John Hauer
May 24th 1958 - September 1st, 2014
Dublin
John Joseph Hauer died unexpectedly of natural causes on September 1st, 2014 at his home in Dublin, California. John was born on May 24, 1958 in Alameda. He was predeceased by his father Harry Eberle Hauer. He is survived by his wife Lisa, and his family who adored and beloved him; his mother Therese Costello Hauer of Carmichael, his sisters Ann Hauer of Novato, California, Mrs. James Covey of Carmichael, and brother James Hauer (Melissa Hauer) of Alameda. He was the nephew of Fr. Frank B. Costello, S.J. of Spokane, Washington. John was the uncle to seven nephews and nieces and great uncle to four. John attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. John's professional career was in the production of quartz glass components for silicon wafers used worldwide for the technology industry.
John was gentle with a generous heart and a warm smile. His nephews and nieces fondly remember calling him Uncle "Gong" as John was a bit too difficult for them to pronounce. Also, on every Christmas Eve, the doorbell would ring with Uncle Gong arriving with beautifully wrapped gifts for them. John's love of sailing, given him by his father, combined with a natural curiosity and attention to detail resulted in a summer project of building an El Toro sailboat in the backyard and subsequent sails on the estuary followed with countless voyages on the Cal 20 and later the family boat Katie Mac. Later in life his traits made him an outstanding digital photographer and avid bicyclist. John's love of the Grateful Dead was contagious as his siblings can also call themselves Deadheads.
A Bible Vigil service will be held Thursday, September 4th at 7:15 pm at St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut Street, Alameda. John's Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the church Friday, September 5th at 1:00 pm. Interment will be private at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's name may be made to Alameda Meals On Wheels, PO Box 2534, Alameda, CA 94501.

To the entire family I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. I know how very difficult this must be, (I have known Mrs. Hauer since she was my 3rd grade teacher many years ago) I keep you all in my prayers and may your strong faith and warm memories of John bring you peace.

I am deeply saddened by this sudden loss. John was my nephew by marriage. I will miss his wonderful intelligent wit. John is in my prayers as are Lisa and all his family.
