Julia Auer Obituary

Julia "Julie" Auer
Walnut Creek, CA Resident
Julie passed away on 08/16/2014 after a long and courageous battle against lung cancer at the age of 71. She was a graduate of both Oakland Technical High School and San Jose State University, with a double major in Design and Ceramics, and had received her teaching credential from California State University, Los Angeles.
She held several jobs during her lifetime: Secretary, Substitute Teacher and Floral Artist, but her favorite job was being being a full time mom. Julie always gave back to the community by volunteering. She was a leader in the realm of Autism, volunteered at her son's school and sporting activities, ushered at the Lesher Center, and later in life tutored through Project Second Chance, an adult literacy program.
One of her favorite activities was ceramics. For many years, you could find her working on one of her projects at the Civic Park Clay Arts building, creating what she called magic. She loved taking hikes along Shell Ridge, travelling with her wonderful husband, Ken, and her son, Tom, and taking in the occasional symphony, ballet, or musical. Though a gourmet cook, Julie loved eating at restaurants with friends and family. She had a quick wit, compassion, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone. Julie is preceded in death by her special daughter Lisa, and her loving husband Ken. She leaves behind her son, Tom, whom she was so proud of, her sister-in-law, Mary Jane Auer, cousins in both Virginia and Georgia, and her extended family and friends.
There will be a celebration of her life at the family home to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, specifically to the field of Lung Cancer Research.

To know Julie in the last few months was to know a courageous person. She was a friend to me as I was a new member of the Lipsticks, a small group of friends. Julie will always be missed.

We have known the Auer family for about 30 years, great people, who endured more heartbreak than most, yet faced it with class, courage and grace. Julie and I shared many laughs and tears over the years. She was a very creative, compassionate, supportive soul. She blew my mind with still continuing all her volunteer work in spite of her ongoing battles with cancer. Tom you have always been an amazing son, courageous and loving! Your folks were so VERY proud of you and the wonderful man you have become! May God bless you!
