Luz Aguilar Obituary

As dust from bullet-smashed wallboard flooded her bedroom, Luz Maria Aguilar calmly offered to dial 911.

Roberto Orellana said he could do it but fumbled with the phone, nervous. A volley of bullets had just coursed through their home in the Montalvin Manor neighborhood, where they were raising three children and preparing for the arrival of a fourth.

"She said, 'I got hurt,'" Orellana said. "I checked her arm, and I saw there was a little hole. I said, 'Oh you just got a scratch.'"

But it was more than a scratch.

Aguilar, 32, died with her unborn child at 12:04 a.m. Wednesday at a regional trauma center, leaving Contra Costa sheriff's deputies to investigate a double killing with no obvious motive or suspects.

Aguilar's daughters -- aged 8, 4 and 18 months -- went with her sister to Modesto before dawn. They slept through the violence, unhurt.

Orellana, a construction foreman who works in Marin County, began dating Aguilar about six months ago. She worked for a real estate company in Newark, he said. They moved into the rental property on Michele a month ago and planned to buy the place.

Aguilar folded clothes in the front room Tuesday evening before Orellana called her to bed. During their last peaceful conversation, they talked about paying off their credit cards and putting together the financing to buy the house within three months, Orellana said.

"She knew she was dying" as the paramedics took her away, he said.

"She said she loves me, and she loves her sisters. Then she said, 'Oh, my baby.' She said, 'I love (my daughters), take care of them.'"

"My baby was three months," Orellana said. "That's the hard part."

Van Bibber went to Orellana's home Wednesday afternoon, gave him a hug and told him to call if he needed anything. Orellana was preparing for a long drive to the Central Valley, to reunite with the children.

He spoke with the girls earlier on the phone, asked if they still wanted him to be their dad. They said they did.

"She was an angel," Orellana said of his fiancee. "Now I believe she's more of an angel."
