Maria Souza, age eighty-six, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2021, after a long illness.
Maria is survived by her beloved husband of over sixty years, their son and his wife, her sister, grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren. All of these she loved and touched deeply.
An East Bay resident for more than seventy years, Maria graduated from high school with high academic honors. A few years after graduation, she married and moved with her husband to their new home, where they lived happily together for over sixty years. Maria was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family, friends, and neighbors, who loved her in return.
Always the first to offer help, Maria will also be remembered for her hand-crafted holiday ornaments and place cards, her holiday piano playing, as well as her expert baking skills. During special holidays she often hosted large dinners, baked delicious pies, and made scores of Portuguese baked goods, including malasadas and sweet bread, that family and friends eagerly awaited. Maria also enjoyed traveling with her husband, and she made friends wherever she went.
Maria never forgot others' birthdays or anniversaries, and she could always be counted on to remember special occasions with handmade cards. She was always ready to take lots of snapshots of her family and friends. With her friendly, outgoing personality, Maria was enthusiastic about family members' activities. She cheered them on with her encouraging and positive outlook, a trait that allowed her to make everyone feel special about any of their accomplishments, no matter how big or small.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, services will be private and limited to a small representation of her immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your favorite charity.
Family and friends may visit her resting site at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, CA.
