Mary Dunn Obituary
February 26, 1945 – January 5, 2017
Resident of Oakland
Mary Catherine Toomey Dunn died peacefully on January 5, 2017, after a long illness resulting in heart failure. She leaves behind loving husband of 36 years, Gerry Dunn, daughter Christine and son-in-law Adam Palacios, grandchildren Giuliana, Adam Jr., and Isaiah, siblings Mary Elizabeth, Claire, Mary Therese (Steven Revell), Rose, James Jr. (Kathleen), and Ellen, plus many loving nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. Predeceased by parents James and Margaret Toomey, and sister Maura.
Born in Oakland in 1945, Cacker lived in Washington, DC for most of her childhood, attending Blessed Sacrament School through 8th grade. The family moved back to Oakland where she graduated from Holy Names High School, then received a BA from Santa Clara University, spending her junior year at University College Dublin. She received a Masters in Special Education from University of San Francisco. After retiring from a career teaching in San Francisco Unified School District, she continued to work with colleagues training teachers to teach learning disabled students.
The Visitation will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 30 Mandalay Rd., Oakland, CA 94618 on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 6:00pm followed by the Rosary at 7:00pm. The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 10:30am, also at St. Theresa's.
Family requests donations be sent to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or to Northern California Branch of the International Dyslexia Association Teacher Training Scholarship Program https://norcal.dyslexiaida.org/giving/.

I'm sure we are two of many who have beautiful memories of a woman who gave so much of her heart and strength to her family and friends. She couldn't stop using her grace-filled talents to help both teachers and students. She leaves the lives of many in a better place in this world because of her gifts as a reading specialist, and that includes our grandson.
We will always love our memories of times spent together. With so much love,
