Miles McAfee, Ph.D. June 4, 1932~March 8, 2009 Former Resident of Berkeley Dr. Miles McAfee went to be with the Lord at his home on March 8, 2009 at the age of 76. He was the third of four children born to Miles McAfee Sr. and Florence Carraker McAfee in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. McAfee grew up in Atlanta's Buckhead section where he was reared largely by his older sisters after the passing of his mother. A gregarious and multi-talented athlete, he was affectionately called "Buckhead Red" by his peers for his prowess in baseball, football and track. Miles attended the public schools in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Playing baseball early on with semi-pro teams, Dr. McAfee competed against luminaries such as Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Billy Williams and many others who became major league stars. At the crossroads of professional baseball or college, his father convinced him to further his education because he felt it would be best for his long-term career. Dr. McAfee chose to attend Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), in Tuskegee, Alabama, where he lettered in baseball and football for four years. He graduated in 1955 with a degree in Physical Therapy. After college he was signed to play professional baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1987, he was inducted into the Tuskegee University Sports Hall of Fame. Over the years Dr. McAfee has achieved many "firsts" in the sports arena - player, coach, scout, agent, manager, president and CEO. His progression to a sports-related career was ignited during his youth as "Buckhead Red" along with outstanding athletic feats such as scoring six touchdowns in one game. The pivotal point in his career happened when he was appointed to Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California where he became the winningest coach at a Division 1 college with a record that still stands today. Later on, he went on to earn a Ph.D. in Business Law. Dr. McAfee retired as President and CEO of Golden Gate Sports Management in Oakland, California, the company he founded in 1980. As a sports agent, he was an insider in the world of professional sports. He authored the book, "Four Generations of Color," chronicling his lifetime experiences in sports, and offering commentary on issues of race in sports management. Dr. McAfee was married to Lynn Lott McAfee, and they resided in Rio Verde, Arizona after previously living in the Bay Area for decades. He enjoyed travel, golf, sports and visiting with family and friends. Dr. McAfee was preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Florence; sister, Elizabeth McKitric; brother, Walter McAfee; and niece, Wanda McKitric. He is survived by his wife, Lynn; daughter, Karen Ilese McAfee; son, Miles Earl (Elva) McAfee; sister, Mary Louise Sims; sister-in-law, Charlotte McAfee; step- daughters, Michele (Randy) Safford, and Danielle Ferguson; granddaughters, Koi and Xia McAfee; stepgrandchildren, Dionte' (Nicole) Redmond, Destini Nowlin, Travis Scott, Maya Scott and Kaelin Lawson; step-great-grandson, Dionte' Redmond II; nephews, Waymon McKitric, James Sims, Eric Sims and Walter McKitric; nieces, Veronica Winston Daniel, Angela McAfee Maskins, and host of other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Dr. Miles McAfee's life will be held at: Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, One Lawson Road, Kensington, CA 94707 Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11:00am.
