Miriam Hunt Obituary

Miriam Hunt Jun. 8, 1916 ~ Feb. 4, 2013 Resided in Lafayette, Ca Miriam Hunt, 96, passed away suddenly in her home where she lived for over 50 years. Miriam Hunt was born on June 8, 1916 in Attica, Kansas to John and Grace Garrison. She had three brothers; John, Richard, and Douglas and one sister Jeannie. Miriam was married to her childhood sweetheart Lloyd D. Hunt on May 28, 1938 in Attica, Kansas. She and Lloyd had three children, Judith, Donna, and Thomas. They lived in Kansas through WWII until it was almost over. The family then moved to King City, California where Miriam's husband Lloyd taught school while Miriam was a homemaker. Miriam's family moved to Lafayette, California in 1955. Miriam went to Diablo Valley College in 1962 and then went to work for Contra Costa County in the Assessor's Office. She eventually worked at the District Attorney's Office during the Nedgely years. Miriam loved working for the County. She made many friends and expanded her knowledge of the world. Miriam will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She was a most loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grand mother and friend. She was engaged and interested in her family, neighbors and neighborhood. She also truly loved the extended family provided by the friends of all her children. She had pictures of her great-grandchildren all over her house and pictures of their art work above her chair. Mariam had many hobbies. She painted Ukranian eggs, did needlepoint work, was a beautiful seamstress, was an avid reader, and a delightful writer. She belonged to a writer's group at Acalanes High School for seven to eight years. Miriam was a member of the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, and the Democratic Party. Miriam was generous to all her family members and a number of organizations. Some of her special charities included the California Lions Club. She benefited from their audio books and machines which kept her alert and intellectually involved. Consider: Braille and Talking Book Library. California State Library, P.O. Box 942837, Sacramento, California. Another charity Miriam supported was the Food Bank of Contra Costa. Consider: Food Bank of Contra Costa, Solano, P.O. Box 6344, Concord, California, 94524-1324. The last charity Miriam had a special affection for was Caring Hands. Caring Hands provides service to elderly individuals that are in need. She had a long and successful relationship with this group particularly Harry Jayasingha, who became a family friend. Consider: Caring Hands Volunteer Caregivers Program, John Muir Health, 2855 Mitchell Drive, #100, Walnut Creek, California 94598. A donation to any of these organizations would provide a fitting and lasting remembrance to Miriam. Miriam was survived by her children Judith Williams, Lloyd Thomas Hunt and his wife Sandy; her grandchildren Deanna Hankin and her husband David Hankin, and Debra Williams and her husband Steven Moran. Miriam is also survived by her three great-grandchildren Robert Hankin, Keegan Williams-Moran and Hayden Williams-Moran. Miriam was predeceased by her husband Lloyd Hunt in 1995 and her daughter Donna Cohick in 2012. Miriam's favorite song was The Rainbow Connection by Paul Simon. One of her Favorite quotes was, "a smile is a curve that can straighten out a lot of things." She was a happy, positive person who loved life.

Aunt Mimi was such an inspiration to me. I enjoyed her wit, admired her for her creative talents, her highly intellectual grasp of the world, her spontanaiety, her wisdom, her realistic approach to life, her generous spirit, her appreciation for authenticity and her desire to see women succeed at every level, be treated equally to men and respected for their desire to make the world a better place. She believed in the Golden Rule and lived by it. She detested racism, bigotry and hyprocracy and didn't hestitate to communicate her beliefs even to those who disagreed with her. She had spunk and courage. She faced life's challenges and kept on dancing. She made me proud to be her niece. I will cherish the memories of her love and the many happy times we shared together forever.
Her loving niece,
Marcia Browning Harrington, Seattle/Carmel

I still can't grasp that she is gone. The laughs, words of wisdom, encouragement, love, joy, happiness, challenging conversations are just but a few of the gifts that she gave to me and to my husband Paul each time we had the opportunity to talk with her and/or visit her. My beloved Aunt Mimi, I miss our phone conversations so very much. I love you.
