Patrick Egan Obituary

Patrick Owen Egan
July 4, 1947 - Dec. 27, 2016
Resident of Livermore
Patrick Owen Egan of Livermore, CA was born on July 4th, 1947 in New York City to Irish immigrants William and Teresa Egan. A promising student from the start, Patrick attended St. Sebastian School, Regis High School and Fordham University where he graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa Society member. He later received a PhD in Physics from Yale University. After marrying his beloved wife Margaret "Peggy," his academic research took him overseas to Heidelberg University in Germany where he completed his post-graduate work. His work in the field of physics took him to Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and eventually Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. A true renaissance man, Pat was a voracious reader, a gourmet cook, a sailor, and a lover of all music, especially opera. Pat was a loving father of three and participated in many of his children's pastimes as a soccer referee, a little league umpire and a swimming official. Pat was active in his community and served on both the board of the Granada Woods Neighborhood Association and the Livermore Human Services Commission. For the past decade, Pat has been a loving and devoted caregiver to his wife Peggy in her struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Pat is survived by his wife Peggy, his sons Michael (wife Andrea) Egan and Peter Egan, his daughter Jane Wrightson (husband Brian) and grandson, Donovan. Funeral Services will be held on Wed., Jan. 4th at 10:00 a.m. at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Ave., Livermore CA with graveside service immediately following. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org/donate.
Callaghan Mortuary is honored to be serving the Egan family. An online guestbook is available for condolences at www.callaghanmortuary.com

I came to America from Ireland in 1961 and was introduced to Pat and his mother and father some days later. They were wonderful people to have known and I remained in contact with them until Mr. Egan's relocation to Livermore, California. Pat wrote my first letter of recommendation for my first job at Immigrant Savings Bank. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Please extend my sympathy to all the family.

I had the pleasure of working with Pat at LLNL. As a young post-doc in the '80s, Pat was very inspiring and helped me set a path for my career. He was a brilliant scientist and will be missed.

I was Patrick's classmate at Saint Sebastian's School in Woodside. He was a brilliant student and a very good and kind person. I was fortunate to see him at a reunion held in Woodside in 2011. Sincere condolences to his family at this sad time.
