Richard Egan Obituary

Dr. Richard Michael Egan, born Christmas day in 1942, passed away in his Walnut Creek, CA home on November 28, 2023 at the age of 80 years old, after a brief illness with an aggressive cancer. Thankfully, his pain was minimal and his deep Catholic faith readied him to leave this world. Realizing that his time was limited, Rich reflected on what a great life he had. Rich was proud to have grown up in the small town of Bancroft, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas "Doc" Egan and Ethel Reisdorff Egan and a younger brother Robert deceased in childhood and 3 older brothers Thomas, Jim and William. Rich and all of the older brothers graduated from Creighton Medical school in Omaha, Nebraska, as did their father before them. Rich graduated in 1968 and did an internship in Omaha and Oakland's Highland Hospital. After completing his residency, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy and was stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital from 1972 to 1974. He then did a fellowship in Urology at Sloan Kettering in NY. Rich always wanted to return to California and accepted an offer to join the Urology practice at Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek, Ca. He loved his career, caring for and interacting with his patients during his 31 years as a Urologist at Kaiser. Since his retirement, 15 years ago, he has enjoyed travelling the world but mostly loved spending time at home with his family and pets. Rich was an avid baseball fan and had season tickets to the A's. He was certified to SCUBA dive at age 50 and had over 400 dives. Rich was always a gentleman, and his beautiful smile & contagious laugh will be missed by all of those that knew him.He is survived by his wife Hope Rubin Egan, children Kristen (Matthew) Kimmich, Sean Egan, grandchildren Jameson & Simone Kimmich, many nieces & nephews and his loving pets Sammy the Parrot and Frasier the Cat.Per Rich's request, an Irish wake will be held. The wake will take place in March at a yet to be determined venue in Walnut Creek. Rich's ashes will be interred in a family plot in NJ, in April. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to one of his favorite charities The Alzheimer's Association, Lymphoma Society, Meals on Wheels or ASPCA.
