Robert Green Obituary

Our beloved father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, & friend has left us all with wonderful memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. Bob was a kind, thoughtful, humorous, charming man who is an inspiration to us all. Born in Oakland, CA to Jack & Ruth Green, Bob was their eldest son. He enjoyed his childhood with his sister, Shirley, and brother, Lloyd. Although Bob remembered living in the cramped living quarters in the back of his dad's print shop during the Depression, he also remembered the good times with his siblings, living on a ranch in the Oakland Hills and later a ranch in Santa Rosa. Being raised on a ranch with horses, his appreciation for animals & nature always held a special place in his heart. Bob joined the Navy while attending Fremont High School in 1944. At the end of his 1st term, he went back to high school, but then was drafted for a 2nd term. As a Seaman, he was a cook & a printer on-board. He was given his deployment papers to go overseas and do battle in WWII. The day before his deployment, the end of the War was announced! For this, he humbly never wanted to call himself a Veteran. He wanted that title to be for the men who 'actually served the United States of America'. In 1951, during a trip to Catalina Island with a college friend, Bob met his future wife, Kathryn 'Kitty' Winje. Having fun on the beach during the day and later dancing the night away at the Avalon Ballroom, the two were inseparable from then on. During their 63 years of marriage, they raised Lance, Lamar, & LaVon in Orinda, CA in a home that had provided a lifetime of fun memories & good laughter, that continued on to include precious memories with their grandchildren. Bob provided for his family with a successful printing business that he had taken over from his father, Lithograph Reproductions in Oakland. He truly knew how to balance a good life work, family, & social life. Bob started the Sandbaggers Golf Club with his father in 1967, which is still in existence today 55 years later. The organization would play various golf courses throughout the Alameda & Contra Costa Counties, as well as special events in Monterey, Reno, & Hawaii. This provided years of active enjoyment with friends.Besides his involvement & commitment to the Sandbaggers, Kitty & Bob enjoyed many dinners & dancing with their friends at the Colombo Club, Fratellenza Club, & Ensign Club. Through these clubs & acquaintances, Bob & Kitty were always game for an organized travel experience when approached. Their fun travels to Hawaii and various cruise trips around the Western Hemisphere were memories that were highlights of their time together. But it was Lake Tahoe that brought many memorable fun times for the whole family. The early years were spent camping every summer at Zephyr Cove in our trailer, then Bob's dream came true, building a home in Incline Village in 1979. Just like the Orinda home, the Incline home provided our family many more moments of togetherness & laughter. Bob was a naturally athletic man throughout his days. He was always game for beach acrobatics, waterskiing, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, swimming, skydiving at 80 years old, 'trying' a forward flip off the side of the pool at 80+, attending a Warrior's game at 90, or going to a neighborhood little league game in a wheelchair at 94. Always enjoying the sports & a good time. Forever a kid at heart! To be honest, Bob has been 'done' with life since the passing of Kitty in 2017. But we all knew he had more to give. It became apparent while staying at the Carlton Senior Living Downtown Pleasant Hill, Memory Care. Although onery and problematic at times, Bob seemed to have touched his caregivers' hearts. The staff understood his spunk, his will to help others, his fight, his humbleness, his wit, & his purpose. It takes a special person to understand the elder and their merciless fight to live. We are grateful for these kind souls. Bob is proceeded in death by the love of his life, Kitty Green; his sister Shirley Green, and his parents, Jack & Ruth Green. He is survived by his brother Lloyd Green & family in Spokane, WA; his son Lance Green, his daughter-in-law Mireille, and grandchildren Jason & Charlsie; his son Lamar Green and grandchildren Kendall & Dawson; his daughter LaVon Fellner, his son-in-law Joseph, and his grandchildren Stefan & Brennan. Lastly, Bob would read the Contra Costa Times' Obituary section often, he would joke, "well, I'm not in the Obits yet, so I must be doin' something right, all these people are younger than me!" Well, Papa Bob you made the Obits section now, you've done real good, Happy 95th Birthday! In forever memory, gratitude, & peace.

I worked for Bob at Lithograph Reproductions for many years. I have been dreaming about him and the shop just about every night. My dreams are always about wanting to tell him how grateful I am for his guidance and acceptance. I am glad to know he lived a full life surrounded by family and friends. He has a very special place in my heart.
