Robert Sweatt Obituary

Robert Jeffrey (Jeff) Sweatt Resident of San Mateo On July 23rd we lost a kind and loving man after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of San Mateo, is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Wanda, and cherished daughter, Jensi. He is the son of Gloria Sweatt and the late Captain Robert Sweatt; brother of Virginia Franzi and Gregory Sweatt; uncle to 10 much loved nieces and nephews and their children. Jeff was 60 years old. Jeff attended Hayward Park Elementary, Borel Middle School, and Aragon High School where he began his love of music and literature. He attended the College of San Mateo and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for an undergraduate degree in English Literature and continued his graduate studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute for a Masters in American Literature. Jeff returned to work in the family business, Fulton Paper Co., and subsequently worked for Chevron. He then took what he referred to as his long detour to do what he really loved and continued his education to become a teacher. He taught at Selby Lane and finished his career at Westmoor High School where he taught English Language Development and English Literature until May 27, 2009. He inherited his love for sailing and woodworking from his father. Jeff was one of the kindest and most gentle individuals you could know and according to his students, he was fun. The family would like to thank the Westmoor staff and students, all attending physicians and medical personnel, all Hospice and home care support, his aunt Enid Shoor, cousin Dr. Stanford Shoor for his constant vigilance and care, and the Central Peninsula Church community for their support. Visitation will be held Tuesday (Today) at Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, followed by a Memorial Service from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral Service will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westmoor High School c/o Jeff Sweatt Student Support Fund, 131 Westmoor Ave., Daly City, CA 94015-3893. Jeff, to this day, so many years after your passing, I am finally entering a message. There have been so many times I´ve wished you were still with us so I could talk to you and share ideas with you. As a kid I looked up to you. I will always remember with fondness the times we shared whether it was sailing on your boat, the Tarheel, Scuba diving with you, playing with toy Civil War soldiers as kids, or just hanging together. You are still missed to this day.

I've known Jeff since I was 13 years old, and we were extended family for many years. He was a kind, intelligent man with a gentle soul and a wicked sense of humor. I can't imagine how hard his illness and loss has been for the family. I'm sorry I was unable to attend the memorial service, but you're all in my thoughts and prayers as you continue to adjust to life without Jeff. Much love.

It didn't really hit me when I first heard of the news. I didn't know what to say, but now I write on behalf of his 3rd period class. Maybe it was because he was the first high school English teacher I had, but now that he's gone, I can begin to feel the full impact of his passing. He always valued our opinions, and he taught us to think for ourselves. His lessons were so well structured, I think that he taught us to teach ourselves through our own thoughts. He wanted a page and a half minimum for each journal entry. I always thought it was a drag to write a page and a half, but now I realize that he cared about what we thought. He never yelled at us, never scolded us, and I felt like he truly was a Godsend to the class of 2012. An English teacher so great only comes once in a century.

With our deepest condolences to the family. - 3rd, English 1-2

I knew Jeff in junior high and high school. He was very quiet back then. He was in the band with me, and he played the trombone. Several times, his father would show up to band events. He'd be the only parent there. I didn't think it was cool then, but I certainly do now. I'm so glad I got to see him at our 40th reunion of Aragon 66. I envy that he became a high school teacher as a second career. Sounds like he made a real impact on the students. Sorry to see him gone so soon.

I went through school with Jeff, from Hayward Park Elementary through Aragon High School. His passing was unknown to me until tonight, and I am so saddened by this news. He was ALWAYS the nice kid; shy and caring and considerate. My heartfelt sympathy goes to his family, and all who knew and loved this gentle man. May God bless you.

From the first day of high school, the day that i would be excited to see and vision myself. So far Mr Sweatt was one of my best teachers. He would always be kind, gentle, and loving person to everyone he met. That is rite that he didnt teach us not just english but how to live and be free. To express our feelings and just break free of the barrior that was keeping us in. Mr. Sweatt will not be gone because he is in our hearts. We will all miss our sweet dear teacher, Mr. Sweatt.

Mr Sweatt was a n amazing teacher and person. He taught us so much and not just about english..he taught us about life. He made us understand a different side. He had so much patience with kids. Anybody who was taught by him will know what an honorable man he was. It was an honor to have him as a teacher and he changed my life. We all knew that he was such a fighter, we finally understood after he was ill once, but we really believed and prayed he would come back; its very unfortunate that he wont .
