Steven Jimenez Obituary

Steven John Jimenez June 14, 1955 - Dec. 30, 2007 Resident of El Mercero and Oakland Our beloved Son, Brother, Dad, Uncle and Friend has passed away. Steve Jimenez was born in Walnut Creek and raised in Pittsburg and Antioch. He was a 1973 graduate of Antioch High School, where he played football, competed in track and field, and served as the student body president. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of California at Davis, ultimately earning a degree in political science. Thereafter, he began his legal studies at Martin Luther King School of Law at UC Davis. In 1989, he passed the State Bar and was sworn in as an attorney by the late Honorable Manuel Rose. Steve practiced law with several law firms. In 1998, he joined the nation wide law firm of Adelson, Testan & Brundo. In 2007, after nine years of hard work and dedication, Steve was made a name partner, and the firm changed its name to Andelson, Testan, Brundo & Jimenez. He was the managing partner of the firm's Oakland office. He was a State Bar Certified Specialist in Workers' Compensation Law, and he was a past Chair of the Workers' Compensation Executive Committee of the State Bar of California. Steve also served on the legislative committee for the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Alameda County. He served as a member of the City of Oakland Civil Service Review Board, and also served as a board member for Breaking Barriers, a Sacramento nonprofit agency that provides a community response to assist people living with HIV and breast cancer. Steve's passion for life ran deep. In his youth, he drove a vintage British sports car along the scenic river roads that led to UC Davis, and later in life he walked through the villages of Tuscany to meet members of his ancient family. In between, he lived his life with vigor and zest, and he did absolutely nothing half way. As a son, he was ever mindful and always protective of his beloved mother. As a brother and uncle, he always stepped up to the plate when any family member was in need. As a friend, he demonstrated a fierce and unyielding devotion. He was always there for all of us. More than anything, though, Steve was an enthusiastic and caring father. He loved Dylan, Clayton and Courtney with all his heart, mind, and soul. He carried their pictures in his wallet, and if you spent more than a few minutes with him, he would regale you with stories Dylan's hockey skills, Clayton's football talent, and Courtney's soccer prowess. His children were the greatest and most consistent source of happiness in his life. Along with his three children, there are many, many people who will always cherish his memory. Among these are his mother Marian Jimenez, brother Bob Jimenez, sisters Susan Jimenez and Stephanie Perry, along with her husband Richard. Others include Marti Fledderman, his former wife and friend, who is the mother of his children. Steve also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father Manuel Jimenez, Nono John and Nonie Lillian Pardi, and grandfather Manuel Jimenez Sr. Visitation will take place between 9:00 a.m and 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 7, 2008 at the Higgins Funeral Chapel in Antioch. A memorial service will follow at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 7, 2008. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Steve's name to Family Caregiver Alliance 180 Montgomery St., Ste. 1100, San Francisco, CA 94104.

Steve was such a wonderful person. I will never forget the time Steve spent with all of us durring his envolvment in Young Life. His dedication and persistence throughout his life will be with me forever. I'll always remember when Russ Nuovo and myself stopped by Steve's, then living in Sac, on our way to Reno. On a last minute whim Steve and a friend decided to go with us. We crammed ourselves into my 1973 Toyota Celica and off went. We had a great time, thanks Steve.

The times with Steve and his Dad, are ever in my memory. Steve was a Young Life leader in the late 70's with me and others. His laughter and smile and genuine care for people will live on. I hope that Steve's profession of faith in the ressurected Jesus Christ will allow me to spend en eternity with him in God's presence, and that all who loved him will come to know for themselves what that means so they to can be assured, and not just assume, they will too. My heart goes out to the entire Jimenez family, Mom, Steve, Sue, and Steph.

Jimenez family, and especially Sue, who I went to school with, my heart goes out to you. May God comfort you and draw you close during this time. I believe in the saying of Peter Marshall "Life, after all, is measured by its donation, not its duration." From the highlights of his life which were in his obituary, Steve donated so much to so many. It hurts so much more when you lose someone "before their time." May the memories comfort you, and his influence live on in those he touched.

When I was a junior in high school, he told me to run for student body president, go to college, and pursue my dream of becoming a lawyer. Most important of all, he said that anyone who told me that I did not have what it takes, is simply wrong. I followed his advice, decided to believe in myself, and made my dream a reality.

And how old was he when he gave me this sage advice? He was a 19 year old sohpmore at UC Davis. Nineteen! From where did he get his wisdom? Who taught him to care so much for others? Oh Steve, we will miss you so!

I first met Steve in the 6th grade. He wasn't in my class but I knew who he was in no time. The special ones stand out early on. I knew he was smart, good looking and mature beyond his years. The next year I had Steve in my Speech Class. We all had a turn in speaking and after my speech he made a point of coming to me and telling me how wonderful the speech was and how I should continue doing them. In 7th grade guys just didn't tell girls these things. I remember how good he made me feel about myself and I can remember it like it was yesterday. Steve's Family moved to Antioch that year. My mother was close to his mother, Marian. I would hear stories Marian would share with my mom, Germaine on what a great guy he was and how successful he had become. I was not surprised to hear that he was such a wonderful person because Steve stood out back when I met him in 6th grade at Los Medanos Elementary School. Rest in peace, Steve and God Bless your children and family.

Steve was a dear friend and wonderful person. I will miss him dearly.

Dylan, Clayton & Courtney...he loved you kids so much and was always sure to update me on how fabulous each one of you were, every time we talked.

My girls still talk about our dinner at Bucca De Beppo with all of you, and how your Dad put his napkin on his head to make us laugh. A great memory that we shall cherish forever.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you kids, Marian, and your family during this heartbreaking time.

I did not know Steve for long. My son, Jake is a close friend of Clayton Jimenez. Steve included Jake in many of his outings with Clayton. Most recently, Steve took Clayton and 5 other boys to a 49er game, they had a great time. Jake once said, "Steve is the MAN". I agree! A man who lived his life to the fullest! I'm thankful to have known him and that he was an important man in Jake's life.

Like so many others, I consider Steve among my closest friends. He was incredible as a friend, but more incredible as a father. His interactions with Dylan, Clayton and Courtney were remarkable for their warmth, respect and nurturance. I feel as much pain about the magniture of their loss as I do about no longer being able to call his cell phone and arrange dinner and memorable conversation. We will all miss you Steve.
