Vosco Svetcoff Obituary

Vosco B. Svetcoff
March 2, 1925 - June 8, 2021
Resident of Danville, CA
Vosco Svetcoff passed away peacefully while napping at home in Danville on June 8th, 2021 at the age of 96.
Vosco was born in Syracuse New York on March 2nd, 1925. He was often referred to as one of Blodgett Vocational High School's greatest multi-sport athletes in the early 1940's. He was drafted into the US Army Air Corps in 1943 where he received numerous commendations and served as an athletic instructor in Hawaii. After the war, he played football at San Francisco State and later at San Jose State. After college he opened and ran the Brown Jug bar in San Francisco. Upon selling the bar, he embarked upon an iconic 30-year sales career with the Hamms Brewing Company, Cresta Blanca Winery, and Heublein. Vosco sure knew how to work a room with his innate enthusiasm and zest for life. He had a knack for engaging and energizing people and was a top-notch motivational speaker. After retirement, he continued to follow his passion for fitness working out at Prime Time Athletic club in Burlingame with "the Boys" where he was equally at home on the court or in the pool. One of Vosco's crowning achievements was sinking 69 free throws in a row at age 70! Later, at the Pacific Athletic Club in Redwood City, he continued to make people smile as their official meet and greeter. Two of his favorite customers were Tom Brady and Jerry Rice, and you could often find Vosco keeping up with the pros on the basketball court and sharing some tips on life. Vosco's greatest love was his family¬ and he put them above all else. He was married to his beautiful wife, Mary Ann, for 52 years and together raised their two adored children Nicholas and Nancy.
He was a founding member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross in Belmont, CA and had tremendous pride in his Macedonian roots and love of his Orthodox faith.
He was an avid Bay Area sports fan beginning with the 49ers first game at Kezar Stadium in 1946 as a member of the grounds crew. In later years he watched several 49er wins as a guest in the Owners' Box at Candlestick Park and relished the five Super Bowl Championships. Vosco loved the SF Giants and was more than a fan, encouraging his children to work at Candlestick becoming part of the SF Giants family. For the past 22 years, Vosco's greatest daily joy was watching his beloved grandchildren, Ryan and Kristen, grow up and sharing with them his good humor, stories, and pearls of their Papou's wisdom; including keeping a positive attitude, having a smile on your face, meeting people, and knowing that you are loved. The house was always filled with big band music and when Frank Sinatra came on, he cranked it up and crooned along, "You're number one, King of the hill, Top of the heap!" Music filled his soul and inspired him daily.
Vosco was predeceased by his wife Mary Ann in 2007. He will be deeply missed by his children, Nicholas Svetcoff of Walnut Creek and Nancy (Robert) Burr of Danville, CA, his grandchildren, Ryan and Kristen Burr, his brother Paul Svetcoff as well as many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Vosco made a lasting impression on the generations of friends who will never forget the sparkle in his eyes, the joy in his heart, and his loving soul who touched so many. We are all better because of him. Family and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services Friday June 25, 2021 at 10:30am to be followed by military honors at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension, 4700 Lincoln Ave. Oakland.. Interment Oakmont Memorial Park, Lafayette following the Makaria Memorial Meal. For further information please call, Harry W. Greer, Funeral Director (FDR-745).
