Walter Colombo Obituary

WALTER J. COLOMBO Entered peacefully into rest in Livermore on January 12, 2007. He was 91 years old. Born in San Francisco, on May 9, 1915, Walter received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Polytechnic College of Engineering in Oakland. He had a long career in steel manufacturing, but there were 3 major highlights. During World War II, Walter was the General Manager of a plant that manufactured Landing Craft for the U.S. Navy. He was instrumental in the manufacture of the first vacuum cooling facility used to preserve produce, without ice, for cross country shipment. Finally, Walter designed a machine for flash freezing meat products which is now used across the nation. After his retirement, he enjoyed gardening and collecting stamps. Walter was a devoted family man who was deeply in love with his wife, Irma until her passing in 2004. He will be deeply missed. Walter is survived by his son, John Colombo and his wife, Deborah, of Livermore; brother, Albert Colombo of Hayward; beloved grandchildren, Shawna and Amanda and great-grandchildren, Bret, Jason, Emily, Geno and Liam. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday at Grissom's Chapel & Mortuary, 267 E. Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo. A graveside service will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
